Arriving in Avignon after a Viking cruise, renting a car and going to Eze (September)

Staying at Chateau De La Chevre D Or, Rue du Barri, Èze, Alpes-Maritimes, FR

Looks like a scenic away from the hustle of Nice. Never been anywhere in Southern France. Driving from Avignon we want to see Marseille, Nice, Monte Carlo and ????

advice?

It’s scenic! Nice winding drive up and up like being near heaven. Eze is a nice small area and after Covid, hopefully not all the crowds.
Menton is nice. You can take a train (or drive) to Ventimellia an Italian town on the border with France. Great market.

Biot is a nice stop for lunch - lots of public art. Antibes. Villefranche sur Mer.
Have a great trip.

How many days/nights? Will you spend any time in Avignon and it's environs? Do you want to spend a few days at other places en route to Eze? If so, you might consider adding Aix-en-Provence. Nice and Monaco are day trips from Eze. Marseilles not so much.

There is so much to see and do; but much depends on what your interests are. I'd suggest a good guidebook to see what sparks your interest in the various towns and villages; then plan your itinerary accordingly.

I would do M Carlo via train from Nice. Parking for non-residents is a big problem and you are directed to huge underground parking areas. Far easier to do it from the train.

Thank you all. We are arriving from the river cruise in Avignon on a Monday and leave for Eze on Tuesday. We depart back to the US from Nice on Saturday

To get to Nice to pick up the train to Monte Carlo are there taxis or Ubers in Eze?

It's easy to take the train to Nice. Then hop the bus to Eze from there. Less hassle, IMO. Also, the bus used to go to Monaco via Eze (the high route, but I might be dating myself on that one so needs to be checked). Train and bus would be so much more relaxing for me than driving, but that's me.

The bus is easiest for the up-high village of Eze (to/from Nice, Monte Carlo, etc). The train goes along the bottom, at sea level. Make sure you know which one you want (Eze village up high or Eze village at sea level.).

Edit to add: your hotel is up in Eze village. The bus is the way to get around for you. The train doesn't come to Eze village up high.

Marseille is a 1h 15m drive from Avignon and 3h 15m from Èze so I would skip it. Instead, focus on Nice (30-minutes), Monte Carlo (30-minutes), Villefranche-sur-Mer (30-minutes), Cap Ferrat (30-minutes), St Paul de Vence (45-minutes), Antibes (1h) and Vence (1h) from Èze.

Thanks to all. we are over 60 and packing for two weeks. Do not really want to schlepp luggage on and off buses or trains. Opting to rent a car in Avignon and drive to Eze. From there, we would consider alternate modes of travel as suggested to get to and from Nice or Monte Carlos. Thank you for the other site suggestions from Eze.

If there is no specific reason you want to see Marseille, my suggestion is to just drive nonstop from Avignon to Eze, have the luggage ported up the hill and the car parked, and then start enjoying the coast. The south is notorious for items stolen from cars; if you can't put everything out-of-sight into the trunk, even an umbrella, don't stop. Your hotel is high quality, so it will offer a lot of services and information that will help you get from point A to point B. In addition to all the places people have mentioned, you should look in a south of France guidebook.

By the way, I am a fan of Marseille, having stayed nearby for six months and gone into the city 2-3 times a week. But unless you have a specific objective for getting off the autoroute and visiting with a trunk full of luggage, it may not be worth your time.

CPO, after 25 postings you surely recognize the emphasis this site places on packing light, -----
----Do not really want to schlepp luggage on and off buses or trains.---- And the short answer is yes since you should have at most one carry on bag and maybe a shoulder bag. For that area, the train and buses are really you best choice for getting around. Otherwise one person is enjoying the scenery and the other is tightly focused on the road and traffic.
