We will be driving from Arles to Carcassonne. I would like to detour at some point to see the Mediterranean Sea and maybe just dip our toes in. Any recommendations on where we could do this along that route?
I would go for Sete.
We are doing just the reverse of you in May. We are planning to stop at the Abbaye Fontfroid outside of Narbonne and then chill in Sete for an afternoon before heading on to Avignon.
Sete is on my list. I'd also suggest seeing the Towers and walls of Aigues-Mortes along the way.
If you stop by Aigues Mortes, it is worth going to nearby Espiguette beach for your stated purpose. A beautiful, huge beach with convenient parking (Hide ALL valuables though, as always). Partly a nude beach in its furthest reaches, but partaking is never mandatory.
We are wondering the same thing, but we’ll be going in the opposite direction. Is Sète safe for leaving luggage in your car (hidden of course) while visiting the beach? The more I research France, the more nervous I become about theft.
