Arles, Avignon, Nimes

We are arriving from Nice via train and want to spend 2 full days in this area. We want to see a bull game in arles and maybe a horse show. want to see Pont du Gard and everything else that we can squeeze in. We are either flying or taking a train to Barcelona so want to be in a good position for departing as well. where is the best place to stay? also, have no problem renting a car for a day or 2 if it helps us see everything.

Since your time is limited I would rent a car. Drive to Aix, lots of accommodations and cafes, maybe spend the night. Drive to Arles see what you can see, maybe spend the night. Drive to Avignon, see the Palace and the Pont du Gard. Take train to Barcelona. It's been awhile since I've been there, but be advised to guard your belongings at all the main tourist sites, If you are driving only park your car in attended garages or parking lots. etc.

We stayed in the best Western in the center of Arles and would highly recommend it for an overnight -- they have secure parking (reserve ahead, they only have a few spaces), a rooftop pool, and are an easy stroll to the main sights like the Arena, amphitheater, Roman baths, town square. And they will stow your bags while you visit the town if you need to vacate your room before you are ready to drive on.

As you can see from my snapshots we picked a festival evening for our quick stop but even with that chaos we did love Arles and felt we could see much of it in one evening and on morning in transit.
