Archeological sites in the Brittany area - Recommendations?

Hi folks,

I'm going from Mt. St. Michel down to Carnac and then heading from there to the Loire valley. I know there are a lot of dolmens and tombs in the area and am trying to sort through what are the top several to go see on the drive in and out of Carnac.

Unfortunately, since they limit the visitation to Carnac, I won't be able to officially go into the site (but I presume I can visit the visitor's center there, right?)

Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations for sites that I sould pick up on the drive, since I have some flexability on how I go in and come out of Brittany.

Thanks,

---Michael

Only a few of the fields of Menhirs are fenced. You can walk around and through others. There are thousands at Carnac.
A Google search of Menhirs and dolmen brings up many. For me, some of the tallest, most impressive have been alone on a trail or in someone's front yard.
You can buy maps with the stone monuments marked.

Simon, you know the best websites. I've learned a lot from you.

It is a wonderful website, but even there not everything has been reported to the site administrators. The important thing is that megaliths are everywhere in Europe and beyond.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

From my perspective, it is a problem of filtering. There are so many and I don't have the time to spend wandering around too much, so I neet a few "strong recommendation" ones from the hundreds in the Brittany region. And of course, I have to be able to fit them in the schedule, which it the more difficult thing.

I had seen the one on the island, and looking into it, the trips out are only 2 hours, so that is viable and I will book that.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of megalithic sites in the environs of Carnac and even if you aren't allowed to wander freely through the famous alignments the road passes by all the major alignments and you can walk the footpath on the side of the road and easily see them if you're not taking one of the guided tours that brings you into the alignments. The local tourist office websites have plenty of info about various megalithic sites in the area and if you visit the tourist office in Carnac they'll provide you with a detailed map of many of the best/notable megalithic sites in the area with marked trails/footpaths. The museum at Carnac is interesting as is the other museum at Locmariaquer. If you can't make it to Gavrinis then there is a covered alley dolmen right on a public beach in Locmariaquer (so free to enter) called Dolmen des Pierres Plates that has some excellent engraved artwork on the orthostats:

I'm a confirmed megalith hunter and I've visited over a hundred megalithic sites in the Golfe du Morbihan. I wrote a report about a week I spent vacationing at Carnac Plage several years ago and it is loaded with photos and descriptions of the places I visited and there is a heavy emphasis on megalithic sites in the region so feel free to have a look in the link below:

Thanks Mystique... those links are excellent and give me a few places to consider. I have put a bunch onmy list and we'll be planning the details of the drive a bit more in the following weeks, so I can incorporate some sites in the planning.

You're welcome mjm6. If you can work a trip to the Cairn de Gavrinis into your planning then for me, personally, it is like the Sistene Chapel of neolithic engraved artwork. Plus, it's a lovely area and beautiful boat ride in the Golfe du Morbihan. If you ever get further north in Brittany someday then a site that no one knows about that is absolutely astounding is the Grand Cairn de Barnenez:

And just for the heck of it, if you're ever in the département of Deux-Sèvres then the largest neolithic necropolis in Europe can be found there: https://tumulus-de-bougon.fr/tumulus/

If you want to know about anything neolithic/megalithic related in France then I'm your guy. :)

Michael, I agree with Mystique that the Cairn de Barnenez is indeed astounding - both the cairn itself and its lovely setting overlooking the Bay of Morlaix. It predates the pyramids and is the largest megalithic mausoleum in Europe.
The drawback is that it would approximately double your driving time compared to a more direct route between the Mont and Carnac (from around 2 1/2 to around 5 hours). Still, that's not impossible and is worth considering since you have some flexibility and want to see megalithic sites.
Sounds like you have a very nice trip planned.

There is a single menhir near Dol de Bretagne (aka Dol) that is the 2nd tallest in Brittany - over 9 metres high. It's located in a field near the D795 road. It's not hard to find and there are signs (or at least there was when I was there about 10 years ago). It's about 20 miles from MSM so not too far out of your way depending on which way you are driving toward Carnac. There is a small picnic area and it's popular with people biking around that area. I had found it on a website before my trip to Brittany and since I was staying just outside Dol I decided to check it out. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menhir_de_Champ-Dolent.

Just got back and really enjoyed the sites in Brittany (Carnac, and Gravinis especially, but we also took in some of the smaller scattered locations areound the area).

As was pointed out, at Carnac, you can walk the perimeter without the tour reservation so that's what we did. It's an exception site and there is a great walking tour that we did (about 5 miles IIRC). Actually, there are a lot of trains, the one we did does a figure-eight in the stones and I think it is comparable to the Carnac standing stones walk on the AllTrails site.

We also went to Lascaux and even better, Pech Merle caves in the Dorgonge region. Highly recommended.
