Appealing village(s) near Chamonix—Day trip by car

We will be in Chamonix for 3 nights mid April 2024. (Great hotel—thanks to this Forum!). We will have a car. One of our days we thought to take a day trip from Chamonix but limit it to about 5 hours total. We would enjoy small towns/villages to explore walking, good (non-Michelin) food for lunch, historical places, natural areas. We are athletic seniors. Merci!

We are going to be staying somewhat near Chamonix this summer and I have my eye on Yvoire and more lake villages to the east and Annency for separate day trips. In April, weather may be a factor in the direction you choose for your day trip.

You could drive through the tunnel to Courmayeur. It is charming, has all the hiking/walking you could ask for. Monte Bianco Skyway is easily the equal of the Augi de Midi. Val Veny and Val Ferret have fantastic views of the other side of Monte Bianco. Food? Well you are in Italy. Brad

Yvoire is a great call in the spring. There is a lovely walk towards the Domaine de la Rovorée, along the lake.
For something more mountainous - but April might be early for that - you could head to Sixt and visit the Cirque du Fer à Cheval, stopping at the village of Samoëns on the way in or out of the valley.
