Anyone solved the Crit'air rental car conundrum?

We're planning a circle tour through Alsace and a few locations in Germany, flying in and out of Frankfurt, where we'll rent and return a car. I considered trains, but the cost and logistics just don't work.

France now has a requirement in certain areas that your vehicle must have an environmental sticker on in it. Strasbourg is one of those areas. You can only apply for the sticker online and it is mailed to you. You must have all the registration info for the car in order to apply.

Obviously this isn't possible when you're renting a vehicle. Online sources seem to say that French rental cars will have the sticker, but we're renting in Germany.

I've reached out to the rental car company and am awaiting an answer, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has any insight. If we can't get this resolved, we may have to stay elsewhere and train into Strasbourg for the couple of days we want to tour there. Very frustrating!

We too rented at Frankfurt airport. Fortunately Strasbourg is the only place in Alsace you’d need it. You can either find lodging outside the emissions area, or park outside of it, or do what we did. We based ourselves in Colmar and took the train into Strasbourg since we were only going to be there for a day.

The Green-Zones app has all the emissions zones information you’d need.

I'm very much interested in the situation of environmental stickers as well, both for France and Spain, as I am using the French short-term car lease program in September. I have just now sent a request for information to Peugeot Car-2-Europe for information, as these issues can be extremely confusing. The cars leased are new from the factory, but no way of obtaining license and/or registration information until the vehicle is picked up at your chosen starting point (in my case, Madrid airport). This could be a real monkey-wrench for the ability to drive through cities such as Marseille as well. Just when I was feeling comfortable on covering all of my bases in advance, as I have used the lease program on several trips in the past, and it has been very slick.

What is your plan for this trip? You don't have to choose between car or train, often a combination can be a good idea.

We're moving around quite a bit and while there are parts of the itinerary that would be workable by train, there are other parts where trains are just not convenient and those days are right in the middle of the trip.

The car rental company was not helpful, they said they couldn't get us a car in Frankfurt with the sticker and noted: "We have many renters travelling from Germany in to France and I’ve not heard of any of our clients being cited for failure to display the Crit Air sticker"

After much searching I discovered that I can park at the train station just over the river in Kehl, Germany for free and hop a tram into Strasbourg, so that's what we plan to do.

It shouldn't have been so hard!

Only the owner of the car, the name on the Carte Grise, can obtain a Crit'air sticker. As a renter/leaser, there is nothing you can do if the rental company does not apply for the sticker.

Unfortunately, with more countries establishing even more emissions zones, renting a car in one country and driving to others isn’t going to get any easier. Glad you found a solution.

I asked for a Crit'air sticker when we rented a car last fall and the rental agency said we were getting a newer car so nobody official is going to check it for a sticker.

I have heard of people who leased a car who were able to order the sticker online the day they picked it up. In case the sticker didn't arrive, they printed out the receipt to show they'd ordered and paid for it.

wouldn't it be handy if the EU, or Europe as a whole, devised a standard which applied to all cars, with one colour/number system which could be adopted by all the countries with these requirements. What a shame they haven't. Then one sticker issued by country of origin could be accepted by the others at various levels. And I wouldn't need a parade of stickers on my windscreen for which I would be most grateful.

too bad...
