We plan to stay in Paris for a week and get around by bike. We get the impression that Paris is relatively bike friendly.
We are wondering three things:
What kind of lock should we bring (or obtain after arrival)?
How easy will it be to find good places to lock the bikes?
Is there a good guide somewhere explaining cycling laws and etiquette in Paris?
Thanks.
These are the rules regulations for Paris Bike Share if that helps

This one has some tips.

Are you bring your own bikes?
Are you renting bikes from Velib, you would lock the bikes to a Velib stand. They are all over the place. If you are renting a bike from a regular bike rental place like http://www.parisvelosympa.com/en/ or http://parisbiketour.net/en/bike-rental-paris/, they provide locks.
Thanks, I'm appreciating the replies already posted. Yes, we are taking our own bike. We've toured by bike before in New Zealand, but never stayed in a big city more than one day. We will be in Paris a bit more than a week. That's why we are wondering about security, locking, etc. as well as local rules, especially on streets that do not have dedicated bike lanes.
Here is a pdf you can blow up. http://parismap360.com/paris-bike-map#.WMYL4DsrLIU
As much as you surely love your own bicycles, you might want to consider locking your bikes in your apartment or hotel bike storage, assuming they are expensive road bikes, and using the Velib city bicycles. Most bikes ridden in the city are city bikes or beaters. Velib has its own locking mechanism.
Oh it is biker friendly for a big city. I live in crime ridden Chicago strong biking culture here with all the kids moving here most
people use this lock when they park a bike
Kryptonite New York STD U-Lock with Bracket: 4" x 8"
I'd suggest bringing 2 Kryptonite locks - one for the front and one for the rear wheels.
The only prohibitions are that you cannot lock your bikes to fences surrounding public parks, or private property.
You are allowed to lock them to traffic signs and the "2 roues" posts, if there is space.
I would not leave them locked outside overnight. Bring them inside so they won't be stolen.
Kryptonite locks are not widely available in France in my experience (if at all), so if you're planning on buying your lock here I would vote for ABUS, a German company who makes similar locks that are pretty easily obtained at most bike shops. My wife and I have had ABUS U-locks for a few years with no problems thus far.
Another endorsement for the Kryptonite locks. Be sure and register the lock and your bikes with them before you go.
Again, thanks to you all for the posts. Here's a new bit of info... Today, after I posted my original question, a book arrived as a gift from my daughter, and it appears excellent on the very topic I raised. It is called City Cycling Paris and was written in 2013. It is in a small format (easy to carry), running 64pp with small font, lots of maps designed to assist in exploring Paris by bike, tips on etiquette and safety, notes on where to find wifi and get food, and more. It was prepared by the folks at Rapha, the official clothing supplier for Team Sky. It is one of a series of eight such books all prepared for cycling in European cities. (The others are London, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Antwerp & Ghent, Berlin and Milan.)
