We spent a couple of nights here two years ago on a sidetrip from Paris and then 3 nights in Nantes. The castle in Angers is worth the stop -- and there is the stunning tapestry showcased in the castle -- the Apocalypse Tapestry. Amazing -- And a series of enormous actual tapestries unlike the Bayeux tapestry (also amazing but not a tapestry but rather an embroidered cloth)

The town. itself has some interesting buildings and is a pleasant place to visit. But the castle is singular -- stunning. It also has a lovely inner courtyard which would be a good place to picnic. Public transport is also excellent.

Love Angers! It is a delightful university town with some top sites. I loved the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée David d'Angers.

Angers also has a placid river running thru it, the Maine, with a great-to-wander old neighborhood on the far side, half-timbered houses on little lanes, trees & small gardens, shade on sunny days. The civic park along the river has lounge chairs for all on its acres of grass, & more trees. The medieval cathedral's impressive, & has a rude carving up on the wall behind the pulpit, fun to find. We stayed several days in an apartment, so didn't eat out much, aside from the neighborhood bakery's irresistibles. But really enjoyed the city's slower pace, &, wow, the castle & tapestries. If medieval history speaks to you, great choice.
