I posted earlier asking about a second base to add to a Nice trip - after a lot of discussion we have decided to do Paris for a week, and debating on a second home. We have only been to Greece and Italy in Europe.
There will be four of us (me, wife, 4 year old daughter, and my mother (74 and active)).
With the little once we are trying to balance a place were day trips are not necessary, but available a couple of times if interested. We like the idea of being able to take a mid-day rest with the little one - we can skip naps on some days.
I like the idea of a smaller city (obviously everything will be smaller than Paris) that had more of that smaller feel, but also has things to do for a few days without taking a train somewhere. We are not going to be spending a lot of time in museums because of the little one. Think, strolling the streets, grabbing some food, looking at beautiful old churches, and enjoy a festival if one going on. Something like Florence or Siena in Italy - I know Siena is a lot smaller.
Ideally no more than maybe 2 hours via train to avoid wasting a day traveling.
I did look at Brussels (I know it is definitely not a small city), or Ghent - also not in France-lol-but I could do an open jaw flight to avoid a trip back to Paris - but wonder if any French towns would fit this bill? I just don't have the knowledge of France. Lyon? possibly could do an open jaw depending on price and connections. Orleans? (really don't know know much about it and would have to train back to Paris- not end of the world. Open for any other ideas to look into.
cheers and thanks for any and all advice.
