We are traveling from Geneva to Avignon in August and want to spend one night between the two towns, preferably closer to Geneva as we will be leaving later in the afternoon. Any suggestions would be welcomed, two adults and two adult sized teens, moderate budget. Thank you!
We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Ibis Annecy Centre Vieille Ville.
The hotel is conveniently located in the center of the town, & not too far from the train station.
The hotel has parking if you need it.
Annecy is a gem, with its beautiful crystal clear water lake, canals running through the town, peaceful atmosphere, & many good restaurants.
We also had fun admiring the antiques & fresh produce at the outdoor markets during our visit. They were held on Saturdays (antiques & collectibles), Sundays & Tuesdays (produce, olives, cheese, sausages, etc...)
You may consider staying at least a couple of nights in beautiful Annecy :-)
If you like ice cream (who doesn't?), you must try the deliciously creamy ice cream at, 'Glacier des Alpes' in Annecy
;-)
Enjoy your trip!
P.S. When in Avignon, consider visiting, L'Isle sur la Sorgue, another small gem!
Completely agree! We are in Annecy now. Last night of three, assuming our train is running tomorrow. This was a perfrct respite between Paris and Barcelona.
i just spent two nights in Annecy which was a convenient stop between Geneva and Vaison-la-Romaine using public transportation. It is only about 40 km between Geneva and Annecy so if you are driving you might want to take that into consideration. I thought a day and perhaps also one night would be plenty of time to spend in Annecy as there didn't seem to be much to see or do, although the antique market as previously mentioned was great. It was definitely the most expensive place we visited on our trip for both food and lodging. We chose Annecy over Lyon, and I have wondered if we might have found more to do in Lyon. Annecy is certainly cute though.
Annecy is a great choice. You can get there by bus, or rent a car at the Geneva Airport. I've stayed in Annecy several times, including a week's stay in an apartment by the lake. But for hotels I would recommend Hotel Alexandra. It's conveniently located, and very comfortable. And I'll second Priscilla's recommendation of Glacier des Alpes, which I wrote about here: http://mainelywinenews.blogspot.com/2010/04/ice-cream-in-annecy-fondue-in-geneva.html
Thank you all! I have checked both those hotels out online and they are booked. We have taken one that is .8 mile along the lake.
I Love the ice cream tips, we will be trying them and the Blog, so interesting, and more hints to be gleaned.
I have it all in my list to do. Merci

not sure if this link works but we just rented the Le Warens apartment in Annecy for four nights. it was located right in the old town and a perfect spot for shopping, wandering and eating. we were two adults and two children (ages 9 and 11) - the kids had to share a pullout couch bed - not sure if this is a problem for your kids or not.
Kiwimum,
Do you have RS France book? He recommends several other hotels in Annecy, such as:
In the town center...
- Splendid Hotel- near the park & lake
- Hotel du Palais de L'Isle- "romantic canal-side location in the thick of the old town"
- Hotel Mercure- near train station
- Hotel des Alpes- "at a busy intersection just across from train station"
- Hotel Central- "this modest, homey, and hyper-decorated place makes a fun stay"
At the foot of the chateau... "These places are in a quiet area, a steep five- minute walk up from the old town on Rampe du Chateau"
Residences les Jardins du Chateau-- near the chateau entry- there are no phones or TV's but all come with kitchenettes. Cash only, no refunds" We saw the exterior of this one & it's looked very quaint.
Hotel du Chateau-- "an unpretentious place run by unpretentious Roman & Amelie, sits barely below the chateau"
Please send me a PM if you'd like to know about places to eat that we enjoyed ;-)
I had forgotten about Hotel du Chateau. Although I hadn't stayed there while in Annecy, I had recommended it to friends, and they stayed there and loved it. It's very conveniently situated, although it is a bit of a climb from the center. Not far at all, just uphill.
We visited both Lyon and Annecy and although the lake and surrounding area are beautiful, we would have preferred more time in Lyon. We stayed at Splendid in Annecy and it was very nice and in an excellent location.
