Trip timing is early Oct. We will be traveling from Montreux into the Annecy/Lyon area for about a 7-8 days of travel then will plan to return to Milan via train to travel home. I'm looking for thoughts/recommendations on where to rent a car from for the time in France that is easy to reach by train from Montreaux then return to for train to Milan.
We are not solid on where we are traveling in the region. I am not married to any ideas but felt like a natural place to travel to from the Lake Geneva area.
I like the idea of staying in 2 locations tops and traveling from there for day trips
Weather could be variable so flexibility would be nice ie it is still warm and could go int alps.
We are active, like to eat, bike, hike, run.
Open to suggestions!

I would take the train from Montreux to Annecy then rent a car in Annecy and return it to Chambéry where you can take a train to Milan?
I do not recommend to stay in Geneva as a big city with traffic and very expensive...
I would stay in Montreux to explore Vevey, Morges, Nyons etc
then maybe stop a few hours in Geneva to visit (you have suitcase lockers at the station) then continue to Annecy by train or bus
stay etiher in Annecy or one village by the lake like Menthon or Talloires...
You can cycle around Annecy lake (easier clockwise)

Thanks for the helpful info - i'm hoping for a spot that is central enough to both pick up and drop of the car as different drop offs can have higher costs. I can look and see if taking the train from Annecy to Milan

oh yes, the TER from Annecy to Chambery then the fast train from Chambéry to Milan but no direct from Annecy!
