Annecy in early March, where to go, what to do, where to eat

Hello everyone, we will be traveling to Annecy in early-mid march for 7 days and are currently working on our plans. We are looking to stay in the center near the canal area and want a hotel that is moderately priced with a good breakfast. Hoping to do day trips to Chamonix, Mont Blanc possibly using a guide. Interested to know what other day trips are worthwhile and doable. We are foodies and look to enjoy the French cuisine also. Have seen Gaelle Dunoyer's website and wondering if anyone has used her services and the feedback. Would appreciate any insight and suggestions regarding the weather, location, and logistics regarding the area.

Hi Dario, Annecy is very picturesque. We enjoyed our stay at Allobroges Park Hotel. It was not on the canals but certainly not far away from them as the historical city center is not very big. It is flat and easily walkable. I know we ate breakfast at the hotel but I do not think it was included in the price. We very much enjoyed a boat ride tour around the lake one sunny morning. While on the ride we noticed a very attractive huge castle /chateau on a hillside towering over the lake and fields and made inquiries about it. After returning to Annecy by boat we took a taxi out there to see it up close. It is the Chateau de Menthon Saint Bernard, about 12 kilometers from the city. It was the home of Saint Bernard, the patron saint of skiers. They offer guided tours of the chateau and the views both above and below are beautiful. But check to see if it is open during the time frame of your visit. It may be seasonal as we were there in summer.

7 days feels like a long time in Annecy in winter. Winter in Annecy is often rainy, very rarely snowy. You can get lucky, but it can also be dreary. As for Chamonix, early March is still the heart of the winter season so you'll definitely need to expect snow and very low temperatures - perhaps not in the town, but on any mountain around. Accommodation will be more expensive in Chamonix than in Annecy at that time of the year, but I would be inclined to staying in Chamonix with a day trip to Annecy rather than the other way around.
