An itinerary question Colmar to Amboise to Paris

I'm a planner and my husband is not. To make us both happy, I will organize a general structure to the trip and then we can be spontaneous within that schedule.

This is a rough outline, I'll be refining before our trip in October

Day 1 arrive in Strasbourg , spending 4 nights in Alsace.

Arrival day will be Strasbourgh ( staying 2 nights there and 2 in Colmar), want to meander around wine villages, drive crest de vosges and Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg. Hubby has also mentioned he wants to take a drive into Germany.

Day 5 driving to Amboise - it's about 6 1/2 hours.
3 options this day:

Drive leisurely and stop along the way ( any suggestions ? I haven;t found anything yet on the route that I really want to see)
Drive straight through, arrive at 2:30 or so - check into hotel and explore downtown
Drive straight through , arrive at 2:30 or so and tour Amboise chateau

Day 6 - Chenenceau and Chaumont ( love art and this year is a special celebration )

Day 7 - Fontainbleu- ( must see - skipping Versailles), dropping car at Orly and taking cab to hotel in paris

Day 8 - 12 Paris ( Still working out that itinerary ) - But have a 1/2 day to Givernay, Louvre, Paris Walks tour - really all the sites and lots of walking and eating )

I'd appreciate any ideas you might have

Strasbourg and Colmar are not that far from each other. Why not make your stay in one hotel and venture out from there. Colmar is smaller than Strasbourg and closer to the Alsatian villages.

I didn’t spend a lot of time looking at your driving route, but a stopoff at Blois might be of interest. I hope you love Amboise as I did. Lovely town.

Good luck

Beaune is halfway along your driving route, in a different wine region with different architecture, and one impressive but small museum that you could see in an hour or two, the medieval hospital. Also a great Saturday market and lesser Wednesday market.

When you are in Alsace, you will probably follow at least part of the Alsace wine route. It is beautiful and fun.
I would also recommend Beaune and there also a wine route there. It is called Route des Grands Crus. We followed it from Beaune to Dijon and then took the tollway to Amboise. We didn't know about this route until a staff member at our Beaune hotel recommended it. Had we researched it in advance, we might have looked for wineries along the route. In any case, the Grands Crus route was beautiful through vineyards and beautiful old villages. I believe the tollway we took towards Amboise was A6 and we got off for a bit to visit, the very lovely medieval town of Noyers-sur-Serein. I also noticed though we did not visit, Vezelay an old abbey in the vacinity of Noyers.

These are all great destinations (NB: Vezeley is not an abbey but a cathedral and stunningly beautiful hill town), but do you really have time? Add in meals and other stops and you probably exceed 8 hours on the road. More, if you "drive leisurely."

A train could get you there in 5-1/2 hours, where you could rent a second car.

We made this same trip two years ago. You can cover the distance in one day without any trouble, although you might want to break it up with a stop either in Beaune or in Vezelay. The medieval hospital in Beaune and the Basilica in Vezelay are both good for short visits. Hotel choices are better in Beaune. We found traffic to be pretty light except right around Orleans, although it wasn't bad even there. Enjoy.
