Amboise vs. Chenonceau

Trying to decide which town to stay in for our first visit to the Loire Valley . We know Amboise is the most recommended for a first visit but the Auberge du Bon Laboureur looks like a lovely place to stay.

If you are only staying one night, it will really not matter. More than one night, you will have more restaurant options in Amboise.

I personally don't much care for Amboise - but that's just me.

(and I could spend days at Chenonceau) - but again, that's me.

If you found a place and you like it, and you can get there and away, go for it. It does look nice. And near Chenonceau

We plan on staying 3 nights, so Amboise if probably best this time.

I really love the Auberge du Bon Laboureur - have stayed there three times. But I feel like it gets difficult to find somewhere else to eat, and their restaurant is too fancy for me to eat every meal at (they do have a more casual bistro now but it doesn't seem that different).

If you have a car, you could do either. I enjoy staying in Amboise usually because I am there by train and have no other transport, and it's easy to walk around, visit the Sunday market, etc. But really, l'Auberge is one of my favorite hotels !!!

I realize my response is not helping you any!!

I do appreciate your response Kim. As nice as Auberge du Bon laboureur looks, Amboise is probably a better locale for us this trip.

I would recommend staying in Amboise. We stayed in Amboise in May and enjoyed the Amboise Castle Royal and also Leonardo da Vinci's home and gardens. There were several good restaurants in Amboise. Chenonceau would have been too small for us.

We spent two days in Amboise during our Rick Steve trip and we really enjoyed it. The hotel was very near the main drag with a riverfront view, and the DaVinci home tour was great.

Auberge du Bon Laboureur is great for 1 night, max 2, because there is indeed basically nothing in the village of Chenonceaux.
