In Rick's travel video of Amboise and Loire Valley he and Steve ate at a wonderful restaurant in Amboise. Can anyone tell me the name - I heard it but since my French is poor I couldn't make it out.
If you're referring to something mentioned on an episode of his TV show then they have complete show transcripts on this site
I think its l'épicerie, if you're remembering what I found on the site.
I've never eaten there - it's not somewhere where the prices or menu have ever appealled. But word on the streets is that it's gone a bit off since the new owners took over.
I don't know if it was l'épicerie in the video, but I've eaten there. Perfectly serviceable. It's pretty much a brasserie menu.
Three or four doors down is Chez Bruno. More of a restaurant menu. Better too, but more expensive.
Quick note too that Amboise it's one of my favorite places in the world to have a kitchen, or do a hotel room picnic. There are very good bakeries, different sorts of fresh food shops, prepared food shops, wine shops. It's a dreamy spot to build your own meals too.
We at at Les Arpents and it was one of the most fabulous meals we've ever had. Inventive, gorgeous and tasted divine! And probably half of what you'd pay for that in a large city like Paris.
We also spoke with the owner or chef and he was friendly and welcoming. That was a fantastic night!
All the Rick videos can be watched either on this site or on Youtube, FWIW.
You should always check the copyright date at the end of an episode to see how dated it is - some of them are many years old. I believe here on the site the dates are also given. It's also likely they ate at a location listed in his book.
I agree with Simon that it's l'Épicerie, but it has been dropped from the France guidebook, so he's also right about it going downhill.
We had several good meals when we were in Amboise in May. Places that we enjoyed were:
Le Parvis for dinner
Anne de Bretagne for lunch
La Florentine for pizza
La Reserve for lunch
L'Ambacia for dinner
Bigot Patisserie for coffee, hot chocolate, pastries and baguettes
Dinner reservations are helpful. Wishing you a wonderful time in Amboise!
The restaurant in question is indeed L'Epicerie. It has multiple recent 5-star reviews, so there may be other reasons why it is no longer included in the guidebook.
