Am trying to make a reservation for Oct 19 at airport hotel for 11 am flight on 20th. Most hotels seem to be > $500/night or did they all just add their own tariffs or am I hallucinating ?? Holiday Inn is booked. I could stay in town and take a taxi (after TGV from Aix) but I think I prefer to stay near/or at airport. Suggestions. Thank you.
Nope something must be going on because that night is outrageous and a lot of places aren't even showing up
I was poking around and saw some events/festivals but perhaps:
"...Toussaints school holidays take place across France during the last week of October, which means you may find hotels and some attractions more crowded than usual"
It's also possible there is a large convention or music concert. Perhaps one of our Paris forum members will be able to illuminate further when it's morning in their time zone.
Not CDG, but I had same shock for AMS back in February when trying to book a night for September. Hotels at AMS were over $400. I found out there is a huge media conference that weekend. I had booked a hold (reservation with cancelation) at a different hotel about 15 min from airport.
Then in April, prices moved down significantly for the airport hotels so I switched.
Maybe book something else with cancelation option and keep checking for your desired hotel.
The Food and Wine fest ends on the 19th, and then you have the video gamers, and two major art shows starting. October is one of the most expensive times to be in Paris. It starts with Fashion Week and ends with the Chocolate Salon. Not counting major sporting events and concerts.
From Aix I'd seriously consider flying out of Switzerland, or taking a quick flight from Marseilles to Milan or Rome and back from there. Cheaper than the train too. You could also just hop to London, but I find it easier to stay inside the EU until leaving.
Thank you all for this info----I had no idea about all the festivals. I already have non refundable plane tickets so I need to keep flights out of CDG. Looks like staying in town and taxi to airport morning of flight might be best. I was in northern Italy same time last year and flew out of Milan with no problem with airport hotel. Oh well.
We got caught in this last year -- needed 5 nights in Paris after our side trip to Metz after we had spend a month in an apartment in Batignolles. We discovered the same hideous prices and ended paying way too much for an absolute dump. We often stay in apartment hotels for short stays in an area and so booked one near Bastille. It was like a bad hostel with zero amenities, small bed and no space -- having a microwave and mini fridge apparently made it an apartment. The misery was enhanced by the fact that we had stayed in the best hotel in Metz -- far more luxurious than our usual digs but modestly priced.
The days or week you are there makes a huge difference. WE had thought October would not be a problem; it was. A year before we had wanted to spend a week in an apartment in Bologna. The week we wanted turned out to have prices about 5 times higher than a week in June or May or October -- we just hit the week something was going on. We ended up spending two weeks in Florence rather than one and one and did a day trip to. Bologna which made us really sad we had not had a week there.
According to Google AI
The high hotel prices at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport around October 19 are primarily driven by several major events and seasonal trends in Paris:
SIAL Paris (The Global Food Marketplace): This massive international trade show is scheduled for October 17–21, 2026, at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre, which is located very close to CDG airport. With thousands of exhibitors and hundreds of thousands of visitors expected, airport-area hotels are often the first to reach capacity, driving up prices significantly.
Paris Fashion Week Fallout: While the official Spring/Summer Fashion Week typically ends in early October, its residual impact—along with other trade events like the Equip Auto or smaller conventions—keeps demand high throughout the month.
Peak Business Season: October is considered "la rentrée" (the return) for business travelers. After the summer lull, Paris becomes a hub for major corporate meetings and international congresses, making it one of the most expensive months of the year for accommodations.Dynamic Pricing: Hotels at CDG utilize dynamic pricing models similar to airlines. As rooms fill up due to the trade shows, the remaining inventory is sold at "rack rates" or higher, often double or triple the standard price.
Thank you all again for this info. Interesting that there was no mention of this from Rick Steve's ofc or any of the reviews I read for his Eastern France tour which i am on which ends in Aix-en -provence on Oct 17th. I planned to stay a few extra days there before taking TGV to CDG day before i leave on 21st. I wonder if others on my tour have had this rude awaking as well. All my other hotels fees while I am in France seem to be reasonable. I did not ask AI--only looked at holiday schedule--live and learn.
The trade show at Villepinte is 100% the reason for this.
For an 11 AM flight, staying at a hotel near Gare de Lyon (convenient coming from Aix en Provence) will be totally fine anyway!
I'd book something close to the RER B (corrected from saying D rather than B -- it is of course the B that goes to the airport) rather than Gare de Lyon. Near Luxembourg station or St Michel/Notre Dame or even Gare du Nord so you can just walk to the train and not have stairs. Or book anywhere and book a G7 taxi 2 days in advance for 7 am for the return to the airport. They are super reliable. If you book a place on the right bank it will be a bit cheaper. If you use a cab you could book on the edges rather than centrally like in Batignolles or Montmartre and you might find a reasonably priced hotel there.
You don't want to be 'near' the airport; either AT the airport or in Paris for convenience of getting to CDG.

Just a note that the RS office would not necessarily know about a trade show a year or more ahead when they picked tour dates, though they do mention specific holidays (e.g. Easter) if they fall during a tour time. Even if they had, you are leaving two days after the tour ends so that's outside of the tour realm anyway. As events and conferences don't always have the same dates prior reviewers wouldn't necessarily mention those either. Thankfully you have some good ideas from forum folk, I hope you find accommodations that suit you.
If you did take the RER from Gare de Lyon, take the RER A to the Les Halles, and then it is just an easy cross-platform change to the RER B to CDG.
Yes, you'd be fine staying near Gare de Lyon. Taxi would be cheaper because it's a Right Bank fare, and as Sam points out, if you want to take the RER out to the airport (keep in mind it may well be packed with people going to Villepinte for the SIAL trade fair, which could be very unpleasant), you can grab the RERA at Gare de Lyon, go one stop, and it is literally just a walk across the platform to get the RERB to the airport - no stairs, no escalators, no nothing.
Also I can't imagine the Rick Steves office keeping track of every trade fair in every country where they are running a tour. That would be way over the top.
you can grab the RERA at Gare de Lyon, go two stops,
I believe the next stop on the RER A is Les Halles where you change to the B.
Oh my gosh Sam, you're totally right. i had a brain fart. I will correct my post, thank you.
