Alsace wine road

Hi RS friends! My husband and I will be staying in Alsace the last week of May. Last time we stayed in Eguisheim and loved it, but this time we want to try another town. We don’t go for the big ones, and definitely no tourist buses, but we do want to be able to go to breakfast or maybe a little shop for essentials. Something within walking distance of less than a mile. I currently have a hotel reservation in Itterswiller, but it must be very small cause I can barely find it on a map. Anybody have any experience they can share? Thanks! Dawn

We stayed in Eguisheim, too, and really liked it. I thought it was the perfect size. My only complaint would be is it is not very central. Perhaps look at Kaysersburg or Ribeauville? Riquewihr, is quite lovely though it seem the busiest, by far.

Of the less lively villages, Bergheim was my favourite. Pretty streets and buildings, a few cafes and restaurants, hardly any shops (I think a convenience store or pharmacy??), a good number of gites, a couple of hotels at least. Works if you have a car.

I also liked Wissembourg quite a bit, but too far north for the general area.

We spent a couple nights in Eguisheim and then 4 nights in Colmar. We had a rental car and used Colmar as a base for day trips. I liked the town Jules M mentioned.

We went through many of the Route du Vin towns last fall, either on the Kutzig bus, or on a Tour d'Alsace full day tour. We were based in Colmar for a week, and did a lot of day tripping. Of the towns we visited, Eguisheim and Ribeauvillé appealed to us if we were to come back and stay longer. Our driver (who lived in Ribeauvillé), said that Bergheim was really beautiful, too, and not as busy as the other towns tended to be.

French friends of ours spent a few days in Obernai, near Strasbourg. We didn't get there - but the fact that they chose this place to spend a few days made it intriguing to us, too. They are big wine lovers, so I think that was part of the allure for them. Unfortunately, we didn't get there on our trip...we didn't have a car, and we just hit our limit of trains and buses at the end. I thought I'd mention it because we'd heard it was beautiful, and not as busy as the towns closer to Colmar.
