We will be in Colmar in late September. We will not have a car. We would like to see some of the Route du Vin. Rick talks about renting a bike. One option is to rent a bike in Colmar and bike to Equisheim. Another idea is from Ricks book-- "One of the most beautiful wine-service lanes in Alsace runs south from Equisheim through Husseren to Gueberschwihr. I have heard Rick talk on his radio show (also on the RS app) that he would rent bikes not in Colmar but Equisheim. So we would taxi to Equisheim, rent bikes there and take this interesting route. Has anyone done either of these? Any suggestions on which is better or any information that would help us is greatly appreciated.
Never rented bikes but drove this beautiful Route du Vin. It would be a great place to ride bikes. Why not stay in one of the charming wine villages instead of Colmar?
We had a rental car on our trip, but rather than stay entirely in Colmar we spent 2 nights in Eguisheim. We thoroughly enjoyed our hotel. It even had a washing machine and dryer for guest use, complete with detergent, for free. Eguisheim is only about 6 miles from Colmar. Staying in Eguisheim might be something to consider.
I spent a few days based in Eguisheim with a car. I saw a couple of groups of cyclists. I didn't go to Husseren or Gueberschwihr. That may be a lightly traveled back road. Otherwise, the roads are two-lane and mostly without shoulders. Speed limits are low in the villages themselves but traffic moves pretty quickly outside them - especially local vehicles because (presumably) they know where the speed traps are.
