I plan to visit the alsace in france in sept. Currently plan to stay two nites in Eguisheim (with car). It looks like it would be easy to visit Keyserberg and colmar. I would like to get to the site of Audie Murphy's medal of honor memorial. Anyone with experience in doing so??? Staying at Hotel Nancy. Then driving back to black forest with plans to hit triberg, gutach and alpirsbach...turning car in at ulm hbf. I am using Sixt as a car rental...picking car up on a sat. Office says it is open till 2 pm. Any thoughts or experiences appreciated.
Colmar Pocket Museum in Turckheim, just outside of Colmar, is worth a stop if this is your interest.

Looks like the memorial is in Holtzwihr, just north east of Colmar.

Kaysersberg has a memorial plaque on the side of the church to the US 3rd Inf Div for liberating the town Christmas 1944. Also the plaques with the names of all of the town's war dead from both WW I & WW II. Almost all while serving in the German army. In WW I this region was part of Germany, It was re-annexed in 1940 and all able bodied men were drafted and ended up on the Russian front.
Some car hire companies charge a very large fee if you return a car in a different country to where you picked it up - check with Sixt to see if travelling by train across the border would be cheaper.
Where are you picking up the car, Gary? Ulm or somewhere else in Germany, or somewhere not Germany?
Nigel....Picking up sixt auto in freiburg...then proceeding to Eguisheim. 2 nts there, then driving thru the black forest....gutach, alspirsbach, tugingen then to ulm to return auto and train to austria.
