Alsace in September

We will be spending at least 8 full days in Alsace. We have our list of villages to visit and are now deciding on maybe two places as our bases for day trips. Any suggestions? Gite? Hotel? Thanks.
Also, since we are taking about 3-4 days to drive back to Paris, cities to visit on the way back? Nancy, Metz?
thanks in advance

We stayed in the old part of Strasbourg several days but don’t recall the hotel name. We would happily return to this beautiful city.
In Riquewehr we stayed at the l’Oriel which was fine. There are so many charming wine villages to choose from. We did a day trip to Colmar and were glad we weren’t staying there as we did not care for it. .
We visited Nancy which has a beautiful square. My father helped liberate Nancy in WWII which is the reason we visited there.
We did not visit Metz.

Suki...that is so awesome about your Dad! Those people never forget who helped them be free.

I spend 3 nights in Colmar in the city center (Hotel Saint Martin) but it would not be a good location for a car as it was in the old city.

We stayed three weeks in Eguisheim starting the end of May this year. We found a house called Herisson (Hedgehog) with four bedrooms and two baths with a carport on the edge of the village. Nice eating area outside as well. This was through Destination Haute-Alsace (https://gites.de.france.haute.alsacee/en). We drove to Freiburg and Strasbourg from this base. Colmar was only 20 minutes away. Great quiet location and wonderful hosts. Easy stroll to Eguisheim and a number of restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Only disadvantage is no A/C, but that is unlikely to be a major concern in September.

We also stayed in Auxerre before Eguisheim, enjoying it and the river walk very much. I think it was only two hours from Orly, so it might be a place to stop on the way back.

Also.try to go.to St. Avoid to see the American cemetery. It has the largest number of our servicemen in Europe. It is about 75 miles from Strasburg. The Lorraine Cemetery, 10,500 graves. Inspiring and sad. Well.worth a visit.

I stayed at a B&B in Eguisheim, nice little village and easy access to the main road for daytripping. Most of the other towns were a lot more crowded with tourists. It's also close to Colmar, you should spend at least one full day sightseeing there.

Before Alsace, I spent several nights in Burgundy, based in Avallon, which was not one of the most attractive but was very convenient with a car. I day tripped to Auxerre, Vezelay, Noyers, Chateau de Bazoches, Fontenay Abbey. On the way to Equisheim, I stopped in Saulieu Autun and Beaune. All were great. Can you add time to Burgundy? You won't regret it.

In 2018, we spent a few wonderful days in Alsace: 2 in the small town of Kayserberg near Colmar and 2 in Strasbourg. Kayserburg is very small but lovely and less busy than Colmar, which we also visited and loved. We stayed in Le Chambard and ate a fabulous Michelin starred meal at La Table d’Olivier. Easy parking and close to all the small towns you’ll be visiting. Colmar would have been great to stay in, too, I believe, as it’s more lively with many many shops and restaurants you could walk to.

I’d loved to have stayed longer in Strasbourg, a beautiful city. Stayed at one of the nice hotels in the old part. Very walkable city and the most beautiful Notre Dame cathedral we saw on our trip, including Paris!
