Alsace Christmas Markets

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are planning on visiting the alsace region for a week in late november. We will be arriving at our base in Colmar from Paris on Nov.24 and leaving on December 1st.

We are excited to visit this region and the Christmas markets are an added bonus. We love alsace white wine but my wife is expecting so we will only be packing a few bottles of wine in the suitcase. The wineries will not be a focus for this trip.

We are avid market goers and love history and hiking. We were thinking of the following day trips from Colmar...
Kayserberg, Riquewihr, Eugisheim, Ribeauville and Haut Koenigsbourg. I saw that there was a Christmas shuttle that is available from Colmar which will be fantastic to see a few of the villages in a day or two without a car. For Ribeauville, my wife is set to hike leisurely up to the St. Ulrich castle if the weather is not terrible. She saw on a blog that this hike was done by young children, so it must not be too strenuous if we take our time.

We have also considered day trips to Freiburg and Basel.

While I have read some great resources about the region in this time of year, it is always great to hear some opinions from fellow travellers. Looking forward to your suggestions and feedback!

Don't forget the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar itself. It's a fine museum, not limited to the magnificent Isenheim Altarpiece.

Yes, don't forget Strasbourg!! But consider an overnight in Stuttgart to visit the unique medieval market at Esslingen. It may be a little too far for a day trip from Strasbourg. Check the train schedules at bahn.com.

Ooops - forgot about the great champagne tasting in Esslingen.
