We will be in the Alsace area for 6 nights and still cannot decide where to stay, but an important factor is getting in some time on some footpaths, to see the countryside, and getting in some nice meals in the evening. Not fancy meals, but delicious would be good.
This will be August.

We stayed in Colmar and did not have a car. If we went back, it would be to stay in Riquewihr and we would probably suck it up and get a car. It was fun to use taxis, though, and probably cost less than a car.
Beautiful circuit from Barr through the forests of the Vosges via the 3 13th C castle ruins. If you are really keen you can go all the way up to Mt Ste Odile. Tracks are well signposted and Barr Tourist info did have some maps. We did it in August in hot conditions but the Vosges is heavily wooded and was quite pleasant.
