Alsace and Burgundy - wineries & degustation

We are planning a September 2025 trip that will include three days cycling on the Route des Vins from Strasbourg to Colmar and another three days cycling the Route des Grands Crus from Dijon, through Beaune and on to Chalon sur Saone.

I am interested in wine tasting suggestions along these routes, though we are not such connoisseurs that we will want to visit expensive grand cru chateaux. A friend of mine who used to be a sommelier said, long ago, the trick is to find a good wine without spending a lot.

Whether wineries or wine bars (or winstubs in Alsace), I look forward to your suggestions along these paths and whether we need to make reservations.

Dinner suggestions in the following would also be fantastic.

  • Strasbourg
  • Obernai
  • Ribeauville
  • Colmar
  • Dijon
  • Nuits-St-Georges
  • Beaune
  • Chalon sur Saone

… and Lyon

Merci.

We were in Lyon and Dijon last May. One of the highlights of Lyon was the Museum of Resistance and Deportation -- lots of great exhibits on Lyon's role in WW II. We dined at Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. a smallish place in Lyon, but a great meal in an unusual setting.
In Beaune, we had lunch at Ma Cusine -- a recommendation from the owner of a wine shop in Orlando, It had very good food and an extensive wine list.
Our highlight of our trip was La Maison des Cariatides in Dijon. A smallish place without 15 tables. I made a reservation by messaging them through Instagram. We did a tasting menu and it was a feast for the eyes and the palate.

Merci Orbenbill.

Sounds tasty!

The Museum on WW2 and the Resistance that you mentioned is on my radar, as is the Musee des Beaux Arts and the Musee des Confluences and the Musee Lumieres. I am sure we will max out with just two of those four.

Our trip will be two or 2-1/2 weeks in France and the rest of our 30 or 31 day trip will be in southwestern Germany. We are seeking similar guidance there for our cycling along the Mosel. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/germany/mosel-valley-wines-and-sights

The Winstub Brenner in Colmar was fun and the food was pretty good. I'm not sure you'll find haute cuisine in any winstub, just in case that's what you're looking for. They're pretty casual spots for the most part. But they can also be lots of fun.

I enjoyed Brasserie Schwendi in Colmar. Fun vibe. Casual. I ate the Rosti and thought it was good. My wife liked the dry Alsatian Rieslings. I liked the beer they served here.
I would go back.

Hi Fred,

The RS guide covers Burgundy very well. Some of the wineries to look at in Burgundy are Comte Senard (RS guide reco), Louis Jadot, and Chateau Pommard.

Have a fun trip.

I can recommend Domaine Martin Jund for a wine tasting in Alsace. They are a small, family run winery just off the Grande Rue (they also rent B&B rooms upstairs). Not sure if they take reservations. When I was there in October 2023, they asked us to come back in about 30 minutes, as they only have a few tables. It was harvest time, and they were pressing the grapes in the courtyard, which was fun to watch.
