We took a day trip today (November 1st) to Arles. The town was basically shut down, because it was All Saints Day. All the Roman sights were closed, and at least 80% of the shops as well. Rick, please update your France guidebooks, because I didn’t see any mention of this. Thanks
In the appendix of the book it lists "Holidays and Festivals” and All Saints Day is listed. “This list includes many—but not all—major festivals, plus national holidays observed throughout France. Many sights close down on national holidays...”
All Saints' Day is a public holiday in France with government offices, banks, shops and schools closed. It is always wise to check sights you want to visit on line to see if they are open since closings, hours, etc. are subject to change and can be different than any guidebook.
Hey, don't feel bad... I used RS France and Provence book and found a lot of things outdated... or not listed easily.
A word for the wise: Google holidays in any country you will be traveling to... We have found a surprise on national holidays that can be great or not so great....
Unexpected holiday closures DO put a hole in your planning -- hope you found enough to do just "wandering around." I learned to check the holiday listings online after missing that October 12 was "Spain Day" and almost had to sleep on a park bench in Sevilla because the hotels were booked up by Spaniards on holiday.
we got all this access to information
people walking around sitting driving staring at computer phones
and still...
How disappointing! I'm sorry so much was closed.
I'm impressed that All Saints Day is observed with such reverence. Very much impressed.
Normally, printed books take 1.5 to 2 years to go into print...fact checking - which RS doesn't seem to do a lot of. Perhaps if people protest a lot, something will be done.
You'd do better to use the official websites of anything that you want to see and do.
One thing I always do is to check if there are any updates to a guidebook. I also send ETBD an email if I find something has changed or was not as described.
