We're in search of recommendations for two village home bases between Albi and Nice. We currently reside near the beach in Florida and have decided to skip the coast, except Nice, on this trip. We have eight days to explore the countryside before returning our rental car.
Our preference is to stay in villages and take day trips to explore the region.

The first areas that came to mind are Gorges du Tarn and Western Provence. For the Gorges du Tarn, villages are tiny; Le Rozier would make for a good base, Chateau de la Caze is a nice hotel in the gorge (EDIT: apparently a bit less nice now after change of ownership).
For Western Provence, Saint Rémy de Provence is the classic choice.

How tiny do you want your villages to be? We had a great stay for a week in Saint-Rémy. We’ve also stayed in Uzes and Gordes, worth considering. And while Valence itself is a city, we stayed in a house a few miles out of town, and that made a great base.
