Driving though and would like to stop overnight in this area. would you suggest Albi, Conques or somewhere else? Thanks
Where are your starting and ending points?
In that area I have only been to Albi and Toulouse, and I do not travel by car. Toulouse is a city of considerable size and would probably mean too many traffic hassles for you. Albi is very much smaller and has a couple of excellent sights: The Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and the cathedral. There's also a fashion museum.
Conques is stunning but quite small. I'd check what lodging is available in each. Conques is on one of the St. Jacques Pilgrimage Trail, so check the kind of options available. They are very different but both interesting.
I wanted to go to Conques for many years and finally went a few years ago. It has a wonderful Romanesque church and an amazing Treasury. Really, if you want to see amazing art from what we used to call the Dark Ages, Conques is a must. Conques is quite small. We were there 2 nights. By the second night we were not happy with our restaurant choices. Conques is built on a hill and is very hilly.
Albi is much larger. I have not spent the night there so I can’t really compare the two.
For an overnight stop, Conques would probably take less time, but don’t skip the church or the treasury.
Thank you all!
Oh yes! I forgot about the organ recital! It’s a sound and lights show! Quite amusing as I remember. You can pay to go up in the gallery for the best view.
