Aix-En-Provence iteniary

This is my schedule for while I’m in Aix. 1) Saint-Paul-de-Vence (art village) or (2) Grasse (perfume + flowers). Afternoon check-in + pool/garden; dinner on your own.

Thu 6/25 Pick ONE: A) Sainte-Victoire countryside e-bike • B) Château La Coste (art + wine) • C) Aix markets + shopping morning (easy day; afternoon pool/spa).

Fri 6/26 Pick ONE: A) Cassis + Calanques boat cruise • B) Terre Ugo lavender farm • C) Luberon villages loop (Gordes/Roussillon/Lourmarin). Evening free/dinner on your own.
Do I have the best schedule for Aix or should we consider other areas or things to do?

When are you seeing Aix? Most of your time is outside it!

Will you have a car? If not, the day trips for 6/25 might require about 3 hours each way, by public transportation. For you 6/26 day trips, if you do not have a car or don't want to drive, there are organized day trips to these areas that you could reserve.
I agree with Lavendula that it looks like you are not planning much time to explore Aix-en-Provence itself.

My thinking is that most will not want to do everything but pick and choose but your right, I’m staying in Aix and don’t have anything specifically planned for this area. Can you suggest a day in Aix and “ must dos” and what I might want to take out of my itinerary? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have never been to this area.

What I remember most from 20 years ago is walking to and touring Cezanne's last studio.

We visited both Saint Paul de Vence and Grasse and would pick Saint Paul de Vence by far.
Not sure about the other choice.
Also, loved Arles and the ancient Roman aqueduct in that area (forgot the name).

I've read that Grasse is nothing exciting unless you are going there specifically for the perfume connection; I haven't been there myself. The Maeght Foundation in St-Paul-de-Vence is a good modern-art museum. It's not right in the village but I consider it walkable. (Check Google Maps to see what you think.) St-Paul-de-Vence is a pretty little place but extremely touristy; best to be mentally prepared for that.

The Camp des Milles on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence (accessible by city bus) is a good memorial/museum describing use of the facility during WWII to house the unfortunate people who were ultimately deported (via the transit camp in Drancy, I think) to concentration camps and death camps in the east. It is of course not a happy place, but the sad events are well described. Posted information is nearly all in English as well as French. The lower level of the facility will be quite chilly even on a hot summer day, so take a wrap. I don't think there's any food in the area around the camp; I think I recall a soda vending machine.

I'm a little interested in this, particularly the negative comments re Grasse.

We will be staying in Nice in October, and were considering a day trip to Grasse. I am worried by the comments regarding it.

Would St. Paul de Vence be a better option for a day trip?

Hi OP CD,
We are currently in Antibes and also have some experience in the areas of which you mention. If one wanted to avoid the touristy St Paul de Vence but still visit somewhere with an art connection, both Biot and Haut Cagnes come to mind. The latter could be an easy two-fer along with Renoir's house/muse which is actually located closer to the seaside part of Cagnes sur mer.
Cafe Brun in Biot is that village's quietest chilled place to eat away from crowds in an interesting setting.

As for dolled-up SPDV, the closeby and more residential village of Vence appeals more to some.
The marches for both Lourmarin and also Aix def rank with the best. Regarding the latter, we have a TR titled D'Aix: an Aix trip report. If one were to google 'zebec fodors d'Aix' it would be easy to find--'zebec' is my Fodors handle. Our photo-dense report has logistical tips as well. Cucuron comes to mind as another worthy daytrip with cafes surrounding the unique and dreamy etang water tank.
Good luck.
