Aix-en-Provence in August

Hello, I am thinking about going to Aix for four days in early August. I can get a great deal on a condo through Airbnb that is centrally located. I know August is not the ideal time to visit because of crowds and heat. However, that is the only time I can go this year because of work commitments.

That said I have not reserved anything yet. I would appreciate some insight.....is this an absolutely crazy idea? Has anyone been to Aix in August and if so, how was it? Any other thoughts?

The condo does not have air conditioning but there is a fan.

Thank you so much for your thoughts!

Jaime, There are questions beyond whether you can tolerate the heat in Aix in August or not. Where is the apartment located: center of the heat-trapping city or the outskirts. Pedestrian only area or are cars allowed? Both can be noisy especially when you have to keep your windows open. On what floor is it: under the roof will be very hot, ground floor could be noisy. Where is the bedroom located: street-side or courtyard side. Even people leaving clubs and restaurants will wake you if it's street-side. Garbage truck comes by every morning, delivery trucks have fumes drifting in... You'll have to keep windows open but shutters closed.

If it's only four days, you should look for a hotel with air conditioning and even better, a pool, and not take a chance on a centrally located condo. Beware great deals unless you see verifiable reviews from people who've stayed in this exact apartment in August.

Thank you for your thoughtful answer! The reviews have only been posted since March 2017. There are a couple of good reviews for this month but no one mentions the heat so I don't know if that's good or bad. The condo is located on the courtyard side of the building but I don't know what floor it's on. What you say makes so much sense. I think I will wait for cooler weather before I go to Aix.

It's been extremely hot, so it's interesting there's been no mention. Courtyard side is much better.

So do you think the courtyard side would be okay? The host told me the place is warm during the day (which I would expect) but that it cools down at night and there is a fan.

Courtyard does make a big difference because your windows will be open and shutters closed a lot. Did the owner say which floor? Top floor won't cool off the same as lower floors. Overall it's doable as long as you know ahead of time what to expect. Take a few showers, sleep on top of the sheets, stock the fridge with drinks but enjoys the cafes too, and remember your neighbor's windows will be open, too.

We stayed in Aix-en-Provence in a nice hotel called "La Caravelle".
I'd check to see if the hotel has air-conditioning. It was not far off le Cours Mirabeau.
If you are used to living with air-conditioning, you might be miserable with just a fan.

Thank you for the hotel idea. I'll check it out and see if they have a/c. I also saw that Sofitel has a "Buy two nights; get one night free". They are centrally located. This may work out perfectly for me because I have decided to spend three nights and not four in Aix.

That's a good decision rather than an un-air conditioned apartment, particularly for only 3 or 4 days. You'll be able to take a cool siesta in the afternoon.
