We are headed for France on 4/May, and plan on carrying on only.
Per AF web site dimensions that are acceptable are 21.7x13.8x9.9” .
I have been using Eagle creek for last few trips to Europe ,mine is 15.7” wide, my spouse’s 13.7”
U fortunately EC is out of business. I can’t find any luggage that meets requirements other than RS
Does anyone have any recent 2022 experience with placing luggage in the AF sizing frame that exceeded the above measurements?
Follow the rules otherwise someone may force you to.
I've done a lot of Air France flights since the beginning of the pandemic, both from the US and within France. I have never had to place a carry-on in a sizer. I have US size roll aboards. I was a bit nervous about bringing US-size roll aboard on domestic flights originating in France, but even on those, I've never had to use a sizer.
My experience with AF and carry-on is that out of CDG, they are very strict and those carrying luggage appearing close to the limit, even the 12kg weight limit, are asked to use the sizers. I have also had carry on luggage weighed. At other AF stations, I have not been checked, but I rarely see passengers with carry on larger than the US standard 20¨ rollers, which are approximately 13¨ wide.
I used to travel everywhere with only a standard 22¨ roll aboard, but these have become problematic as many airlines, even those in the US, have tightened and enforced carry on restrictions. I now use a slightly larger bag and check it.
Stephanie, I had a flight booked on Swiss air with very restrictive carry-on size requirements and I spent quite a bit of time stressing over this. Can't remember now exactly what dimensions were required but almost every bag I came across was not small enough. Finally found the acceptable size which was made by Guess. Hard sided nonexpendable with Gs all over them. I found them at Ross dress for less in Emeryville California. I purchased 2 and then our flights changed and we wound up on United! My take on this is better safe than sorry although it was a hassle finding the bags and needing to put the same number of items in this small carry-on as I did on my "American" expandable carry-on. Anyway, I wish you and very good trip. I feel that France is worth whatever amount of hassle it takes!
ebags.com and perhaps other shopping websites let you filter your search by international carryon size.
Eagle Creek is not out of business. It was sold and is still operating.
I just flew Air France from Paris Orly to Nice this morning and no one checked the size of any bags. We use Eagle Creek 22” and never worried about it.
I flew AF from NCE to ORY yesterday and the sizer was in full use at the bag drop-off line just after check in.
I would encourage you to cross pack in your two bags ( just in case one is delayed) and check the larger one. By the time you walk from the landing to the carrousels the bags will be coming out of the chute!
Just flew them this past week and had no issues with a bag I recently bought. I carried my rolling bag and my bac pack on both a flight from US to Paris, and Paris to Nice. No one ever checked the size of our bags.
In October 2021 my bag fit easily inside the sizer, but they made me gate check. This was for the leg from CDG to NCE. Of course I saw plenty get on with bigger, but you can't really negotiate these things. They were firm. Be ready for any eventuality.
A few years ago I flew AF from CDG to AMS and it happened to me at the gate. This AF staffer told me: "I need you to check in your bag!" I responded firmly: "I have a bunch of fancy chocolates in my bag; and I go through all the hassle just so I don't have to check it in. So NO I'm not checking in my bag!!!"
Sure enough she asked me to use the sizers. Luckily I had an Eagle Creek measured 22 x 14 x 9”; and it weighted slightly less than 26 lbs :) (I always carry with me a small digital luggage scale)
I flew AF in October, plane was half full each way, I had my own row each time. Yet out of CDG, I had to put my (overly full) carryon in the sizer too.
We just got home yesterday on our return trip from CDG on Air France. No one checked out luggage sizes, and it was a completely full flight. We had our carry-on bag, backpack and a shopping bag. Everyone else seem to have the same as well. My suggestion is to get in line early to be sure you get to your seats and have overhead space available to store your carry-on. The last stragglers boarding were desperately trying to find space, and their luggage ended up being far away from their seats.
I found luggage that complies
