How difficult is air travel within France? Seems that if I want to get from Bayeux to Provence, it would be quicker to fly CAEN to Lyon or Marseilles. And, cost is comparable. Thoughts?

If it works for you, do it. HOP! (Air France) has a single nonstop 4 days a week to Marseilles starting mid May.

ditto. you just have the obvious rigorous security screening; I'd take a 1:30 direct plane ride over a 6-7 hour train ride with connections
