Wondering what on earth is going on with the air quality in Paris. Our entire 8 days we got alerts as to poor or dangerous air quality, with the map showing it in a deep red zone. In all the times we have visited Paris, just don't recall this. Is this the norm now? What is causing it?
JR, I noticed on a weather app several days when Arles was in the red zone. Could not figure it out. I did not see wildfires in the area.
Paris is one of the most polluted cities in Europe and the air quality sometimes measures worse than Beijing. Typically a period of low wind days exacerbate the problem by enabling the levels to build up. There have also been recent sand clouds brought up from Africa that have heavily affected Spain and less so France and the UK which will also add to the poor air quality.
If you just visited this week or last week, you came in the middle of an exceptionally long stretch of sunny high pressures, which triggered ozone pollution alerts. Thankfully, ozone pollution has only mild effects in healthy adults; particle pollution (which happens a lot here too...) is worse 😑.
