Air France Pilot Strike Update?

There is a notice on Air France's sire of the pending June 11-14 pilot strike. We are travelling on Air France June 17th. Is anyone aware of whether any previous strikes (if there have been any) have gone longer then the stated time frame? I know France does strikes differently then the U.S. Kind of nervous.

There have been a lot of posts recently about French strikes, including an earlier Air France strike that was cancelled. You might find some info on one of those about strike duration. I recall a comment by a Parisian resident (Kim?) about the mechanics and rules regarding French strikes. It may be that when a strike is called for specific days, it means those days only and no further, unless maybe they leave it open or file another notice. But I'm no expert on French strike law.

Right now the strike is planned for only June 11-14. However, the pilots have made clear that they MAY also strike some additional days later if they don't get what they want.

My guess is that you will be okay on June 17th, that they wouldn't RE-strike SO soon, but that is mere supposition on my part not backed up by any actual knowledge!!

I was talking to a Delta Airlines rep today regarding another issue and she mentioned the headache with the Air France strike and all the cancelled flights. She said the union always warns the industry of the start and end of the strike. It's not like in the US where the strike goes until the negotiations are concluded. I fly into Paris on 6/25 - hopefully all the transportation and sanitation strikes will be over! The french sure like to strike.

This morning I received notice from Air France that our flight from Marseilles to Amsterdam for June 14 had been canceled and that we had been rebooked for the following day. This is a major disruption to our vacation plans and too late to cancel the hotel reservation for June 14th in Amsterdam. Now I have to pay for a more expensive hotel at Marseille airport and hope to eventually be reimbursed by Air France. These striking pilots and other trade groups are nothing but "economic terrorists" causing financial harm and other major inconvenience to innocent third parties. The owner of our small 40-room hotel in Provence told us how all his guests fled and everyone else canceled their reservations a few weeks ago during the fuel crises. I will NEVER fly on Air France again as it seems that every year we have to deal with strikes or aircraft mechanical failure.

Last week I moved up my AirFrance flight from Nice back to the USA to avoid the strikes. I checked this morning and the original flight I was to take from Nice to CDG was indeed cancelled due to the strike.

It's too bad the general public is inconvenienced by these labor actions, sometimes quite costly. Just today I had to get out of the metro and walk, while tomorrow should be a real shut down while the labor law is being debated by legislators who rarely take public transportation.
However, the employees are trying to ward off the American labor system of one-week vacations and lack of benefits. It affects us, but it affects them even more. There must be a middle ground somewhere that guarantees a job, fair wage, and enough vacation time. After all, if anyone knows what it is to be alloted a miserly vacation, it's the Americans who have to cram Europe into ten days and pray they don't get sick.

BTW, I was in the Dordogne during the fuel disruption. Nobody fled and nobody canceled where we were staying. And in four weeks we've never had trouble filling the tank.
