Air France

Looking for feedback on flying Air France from a Delta US major hub to Paris. Is service good? Is it on-time? Any cancellation issues? How easy ia it to upgrade from economy to Priority or first class?

Do you mean business class or La Premiere?

I have flown Air France a number of times on a Delta ticket. The preflight safety videos stick out in my mind -- very classy! Service was fine. The food on all my flights had an Indian bent for whatever reason. Flights were on time. No cancellation issues, though a labor action can break out at any moment in western European countries.

I sat in whatever cabin I purchased (mostly coach) -- I did not try to upgrade. I feel like the best advice on transatlantic flights these days is to buy the cabin you want at the time you purchase your original ticket. The airlines report passengers are paying for premium seats these days, and I haven't seen an upgrade offer on a transatlantic flight in quite some time.

Last October I flew Air France business class from SFO to CDG, and would absolutely recommend it. I paid cash for it (approx. $1800) which got me a lie-flat seat, lounge access, and of course a great dinner and plenty of champagne. Unfortunately turbulence kept me awake for some of the flight, there was no Wi-Fi, and the breakfast was just OK, but I would definitely do it again.

I flew Premium back, and that was also very nice. I figured I wouldn’t need to sleep on the westbound flight, and anyway the return Business fares were much higher than the outbound ones for some reason.

I've flown both Delta and Air France business class to or from France. I consider them fairly interchangeable, but the bigger difference is what and how new of an aircraft they operate on any particular route. Cancellations for either could happen, but usually not because of the airline itself. I will say that after buying a Delta ticket, sometimes it is harder to upgrade on an Air France code-share flight on that ticket.

We're flying to France in April from Boston, on an Air France ticket, we will fly coach over on an Air France operated flight and a Delta operated flight back (comfort plus because it was only a slight upgrade). It would have been nice to get into the economy plus (premium) on the way over but it was a big cost jump. The biggest advantage to returning from CDG on Delta is that you're not subject to the very strict weigh in before boarding the tram to the gates for Air France. Everything you carry must go on the scale and be below the weight limit. Leaving from Boston it's not as critical. We are very careful about our weight and size of carry on, but it's still stressful to deal with that weigh in procedure.

Every flight that I've flown when booking with Air France has had me on a Delta-operated flight from Minneapolis. So when you're booking, check to see what it will be, because the Delta-operated flights are just like any other flight.

We just booked PE to and from CDG at a ridiculous price and alas it appears they are using those dreadful clamshell slide forward seats in Premium economy -- If I had realized that when I was booking I would have booked comfort economy. The PE clamshell seats which we flew on Delta a few years ago are torture chambers. Even the FAs told us they thought the economy seats which recline are more comfortable. We used to be able to upgrade to business for several years but since COVID we have never been able to do that as the planes were full. They are cutting way back on flights The AF/Delta flights were the only direct flights I could find from Chicago.

I only flew Air France once, in Premium Economy. I confess that I didn't focus on price because this was a special treat for us and our kids and grandkids to celebrate a significant wedding anniversary and birthday, so it was going to be a splurge no matter what. The seats were the shell type. They were very comfortable, and all the complaints I had read about them seemed incorrect. However, we are a family of fairly short people, so that may have played into it. The service, availability of wine and champagne, comfort, food, and boarding and disembarking processes were all great. (Not as deluxe as business class, which I once flew on Lan Chile, but sufficiently posh-ish). In flight entertainment options were good also.
I haven't flown coach on AF so I can't compare. We (and our offspring) flew from Los Angeles and San Francisco, on AF itself. I would recommend their premium economy, but it was a bit pricey. (The price went up the later I booked.)
Usually we fly coach, and experiences on various airlines are all over the map!

P.S. We check bags....too hard to put them in the overhead compartment at our ages, so we have no weight limit problem. In all honesty, we pack very lightly anyway. But carry-on rules might affect your choice.
