Air condition in late June

Hello, we will be in Paris June 26-29. I have reservations at two different properties. Hotel de La Motte Picquet in the Rue Cler and les3chambres bed and breakfast in the 9th. The bnb doesn’t have any AC. The hotel does. All of our other accommodations in France do you have AC. The owner of the bed-and-breakfast says air-conditioning is not very French. It’s in an apartment building. But it’s the top rated bed-and-breakfast on trip advisor in Paris. Excellent reviews. I prefer the bed-and-breakfast because it’s quite charming and I like the location. Any opinions on whether AC is important or not? I just remember our other trip to Paris it was approaching 90° during the day. But that was in July. Thanks in advance for your help. B and B does have oscillating room fans available.

Completely a matter of personal preference and your knowledge of what it takes for you to sleep at night.
I always opt for the possibility of air conditioning, but that is the way things work for me. I want to know that after a busy or tiring day around the city, I can come back and be comfortable and rest.

From May into September, Paris lately has been experiencing more and more really hot days. You've been in the heat in July and know how uncomfortable 90 degrees can be. Yes, AC is not very French, but because of the heat waves lately, more and more Parisians are installing it where they can. You just have to figure how miserable you will be if a heat wave hits while you're in Paris and place your bet accordingly.

I'm pretty miserable without air conditioning if it's hot outside. I have occasionally gutted it out for just one night when the cost of an air-conditioned room was going to be about double the cost of an otherwise-acceptable option, but for three (four?) nights, I wouldn't take the chance. But then I don't go to Europe to experience charming lodgings, and you obviously do.

I don't do well in the heat, but sometimes a good fan is enough for me. If owner can't supply one and the temps are too warm for comfort, you can get a 12" table fan for a small investment (and maybe the B&B would even reimburse you) in central Paris.

You really never know. I paid about €20/night (4N) more for a room with AC in late June in Burgundy 3 years ago - and never needed it. In fact the last two mornings, I had to turn on the heat, it was so chilly inside.

I have spent a week in Paris in June with no AC. I thought I'd take my chances because it was such a beautiful B and B. It was in the mid 90s daily. Never again even with a fan. I'll either find lodging with AC or go a different time of year.

I stayed on the top floor of the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in June a few years ago. Our room measure 100F in the afternoon and it never cooled down to a comfortable sleeping temperature. We avoid traveling in summer; if we do so, we make sure we have AC.

Another vote for AC. I've not been to Paris in June but was there in an end-of-August heat wave. I was out early in the AM and back to the hotel in the AC by 3PM. Even by 730 in the evening it hadn't cooled down enough to make it pleasant to sit outside for dinner. I will add that I just do not tolerate heat at all.

I have also stayed at Hotel de la Motte Picquet and the staff there is so very nice. The breakfast room is tiny so it's good if you are an early eater!

If you need it and you have it then you're all set for a great time. If you need it and DON'T have it - you'll be miserable.

It also lets you close your windows to keep out insects, cigarette smoke, noise, etc

I'd go for the hotel with air-conditioning. You never know when you will need it.
Fans don't do much, however, unless you're accustomed to them.

The owner is correct in that it "is not very French."

On the AC issue, it all depends on your comfort level when it is a broiler outside, and I've been in Paris in July and August when it was just that. For me AC is not important, I don't need it, certainly will not pay extra for it. I stay in a 2 star hotel without AC.

I live in southeastern France and am often in Paris. I agree with the person who said the summers are getting hotter. Late June might be ok, but it might not. If you love a/c, as I do, go for the hotel. One word of caution, though: plenty of French hotels that claim to have a/c may not, or it may be very feeble indeed, or they may not turn it on throughout the hotel until some specified date or whenever THEY think it's hot ;-) I would call/write to check on these things. And, indeed, a/c is not very French, but it is going to have become so, as climate change turns things upside everywhere. I work in an un-air-conditioned building, and it is increasingly unbearable. Bonne chance! Faith McLellan
