After the palace, what to do in Versailles?

Hello,

In a year we are ending a Northern France tour in Versailles. We will go to the Palace and Gardens, and would like to extend our trip one more day. Is there enough to do in Versailles to keep us there for one more day before we fly out of Paris? We don't need to be dazzled, French charm is good enough.

Hi,
The town itself is quite charming.
Facing the palace, standing outside the RER station, turn right and walk along that road.
I happened to be there on Market day, and it was really interesting to see.
As it was 8 years ago, I’m afraid I don’t remember which day of the week.
It was partly indoors, partly out.

Versailles is plenty charming. Very good restaurants; lovely streets to stroll. I highly recommend as a restaurant choice Au Chien Qui Fume. Great food, great atmosphere.

Worth visiting is the Gallery of Coaches opposite the main entrance of the palais. Nice and unique collection of horse driven carriages and a few sedan chairs, with the golden coach as highlight. Entrance is free, but only open during weekend, maybe more days during summer, however not sure about this.

I would suggest given this extra time to visit the city itself, usually worth exploring historically and culturally.

We visited Versailles first thing on a Sunday about 10 years ago; before uber and apps and smart phones. For whatever reason, the train station shut down when we were ready to go back to Paris. No explanation that any of us who didn't speak French could figure out. We tried using a pay phone to call a taxi that never showed up; lots of confused tourists not understanding how to get back to Paris. The town was quiet because it was Sunday, but the energy of the tourists was anxious so we decided to go walk around and explore and ponder the situation. I do remember enjoying our unexpected day in the town of Versailles; including a lovely meal. And then later early evening, the trains were operational and we made it back to Paris. Enjoy!
