Any suggestions for a 4-5 day "add-on" train trip in/out of Paris in February? Thinking of Geneva or Amsterdam, but can happily stay in France (never been anywhere else but Paris).
We always include 4-5 days in London, just a little over 2 hours away via the Eurostar.
Given it's a February trip, unless you wanted to ski in France, stick to another city so if the weather is not good, you have plenty of options to occupy your days. Also, if you aren't planning to rent a car and need to stick to trains, that's another reason to stay in a city.
If you have your heart set on Amsterdam, go for it. It's easy to get to from Paris. You won't get there as fast as you would London, but you also won't have to switch currencies. Or, you could easily get by train to Belgium, base yourself out of one city and take a few day trips (ex. stay in Ghent, day trip to Bruges, Brussels or Antwerp).
We loved Lyon, plenty to do, see, and eat for a few days, in particular, the Lumiere Brothers Museum and the Resistance Museum.
I would fly to Barcelona or Rome and hopefully some winter sunshine to brighten your travels.
If you want to train in and out of Paris in Feb, I vote for London. But if that is not your choice, then my second vote is for Amsterdam.
Either city, you can not go wrong with and I vote for 5 days! Have a wonderful trip. Both have museums and cafes to entertain you. But London has great pubs, great museums and great theatre. Plus wonderful shops and Covent Garden and Leadenhall market. Tons of things to see and do if the weather is not good. Plus tea at some really nice places! Wish I was going!
Great suggestions all. Many thanks to you all for taking the time to give advice.
It's only a 45 minute train ride to Versailles , you could spend a day or two there . Amsterdam is about a 3-1/2 train ride , a very walkable city and the trams are also very efficient ..enjoy
I think Amsterdam is a great idea for a combo trip! Go for it!
One of the best trips ever was a combo Paris / Amsterdam. They are among my most favorite cities in Europe. Train connections are excellent and you can be in Amsterdam in a few short hours or stop over in Bruges or Ghent? though that complicates a sweet TGV door to door. Amsterdam is small enough to be walkable and offers fantastic museums. You could consider a day in Haarlem as well. Perhaps an open jaw ticket would suit your needs. Good luck and safe travels.
My wife and I did the Paris Amsterdam back to Paris trip last sept , by train . Easy to travel back and forth , enjoy
I would vote for the Amsterdam option as well. It is lovely city to just stroll thru. The museums are great as well.
I did Paris to Amsterdam about five years ago by train and it was great.
Thank you all so much for your thoughtful suggestions. Looks like it's Amsterdam! Strasbourg is also an interesting choice. Huumm....maybe the jury's still out on my end. Thanks!
Whatever you decide , enjoy the trip
Thanks to all. Amsterdam it is. Reserving train tickets now. Keep On Travelin'!
