Activities with 9 year old son in Provence?

We will be in Provence for about a week this June. We are staying near Avignon. Any suggestions for activities/sites with a 9 year old boy? We are planning to see a bullgame in Arles and the Pont du Gard so far. Thank you!

jill, the Pont du Gard would be good for a couple of hours at least. Walk all the way across and down to the river. It's a bit rocky there but easily walkable to the water and should provide a nine year old with some fun. You can also rent kayaks in the area and paddle under the famous aqueduct, though I don't believe they are right at the Pont du Gard.

The Carriere des Lumiere near Les Baux is something that would be fascinating for kids and adults alike, an enormous old quarry now used to present art, projected onto the walls, ceilings, and floors-spectacular. Arriving to Les Baux a little early (or late) in the day is a good strategy for beating some of the crowds-tour groups that is.

My boys (they were a little older -- 13 and 15) enjoyed the Roman arena in Nimes. They liked the audio guide and, as I recall, towards the end of the tour there was a section about the different kind of gladiators which they loved! This section was a series of signs with pictures.

We had a grand-daughter (15) and a grandson (10) there in 2012 summer. We took the bus from Aix to Cassis for a day at the beach. Easy trip and a beautiful beach and Sea. They loved it.

Maybe a drive to the Carmague and seeing the flamingos and some horseback riding. It is such a unique area, also great little beach town to hang out in.
