We will be spending our last few days of a 12 day road trip in Giverny and then returning our rental car to Mantes la Jolie and taking the train to a hotel near CDG to spend the night before our flight.
We will be going to Monet's house and garden the day before. We just need an activity or cute village to see for about 4 hours on our last day before turning in our rental car. Any ideas?
The neighboring city of Vernon is nice, but small. Larger options would be Dreux and Gisors - the latter has a comparably large and very old castle ruin.
If you like palaces or castles, use „chateau“ in google maps for the region - quite some options available, depending on what style you like.
Nearby La Roche-Guyon is lovely. You can explore the countryside north of the Seine with little charming places like Ambleville, Genianville and Guiry-en-Vexin. Villarceau is a nice park with an 18th century Château, good for a stroll. Think entrance of the park and château are still free.
However my preference would be Lyons-la-Forêt, but needs an hour driving. Having time you can combine it with a visit to Château Gaillard for it's stunning view with the Seine and Andelys at the background.
