We are driving thru' Provence in September and want to visit Aix but would rather not drive into the city, can anyone suggest a nice place to stay on the outskirts with parking/. Maybe a smaller town with transportation into Aix. Thanks Jacqueline Stewart
Check out logishotels.com. This is the website for small, family-run inns and they almost always have on-site parking at no extra charge. Logis hotels are all over France. We have stayed at about 20, I think, over the years. Sometimes the owner is a very good chef so you can get interesting meals as well. Generally they are a bit out of town though we have found some right in the centre of small towns and even those had parking available.
What Ben said. We rented an apartment for 8 nights in Aix at the end of June, 2012. There were 2 large capacity underground parking garages within easy walking distance from our apartment. There were also plenty of restaurants and grocery stores nearby. We took the car out of the garage to drive to locations in the area.
Our apartment was the Aix Mirabeau, owned by an American. She has other properties, including another one in Aix. Ours was just a block from the Cours Mirabeau.
This is a link to parking facility information: http://www.semepa.fr/category/parkings/les-parcs/parc-mignet. It is actually to the Mignet where we parked, but you can click on Plan d'Aix to see where the garages are, then on each one to see what the entrances look like. That makes a big difference since we are so used to tall parking structures or flat empty lots as opposed to the more typical European underground ones.
If you are interested, you can go to my little blog about our time in that part of France. It works up with the first bit here. We had a great time there and enjoyed being based in Aix-en-Provence so that we could drive several directions. We tend to stay in larger towns due to health issues, so that's another reason why we picked Aix over some other places in the area.
