A nice little hotel - Maison Mere in the 9th Arr

Our plans changed drastically on our recent France trip...we needed to find (a scramble!) a hotel in Paris for the weekend (had to scrap our plans for Normandy, where we had hotel rooms reserved in Bayeux then Rouen). The Paris hotel in which we started, had no availability to extend us. After much frantic searching, we came upon Maison Mere, in the 9th (although close to the 10th and Gare de Nord). They had space (we had to prepay) and the price was very reasonable (although it was the usual small Paris hotel room). Sparkling clean place (seemed new) with an extremely friendly and helpful staff -- especially Wissam. It was so close to boulangeries and Carrefour. It was two short blocks off Rue La Lafayette (I walked to Galeries Lafayette in under 15 minutes) and the Cadet metro stop.
Rue Cadet was an amazing little street - so many great tasting places! I sampled 1 through 6 below; #7 looked good as it was very busy. I regret to say Le Ptit Piano disappointed a bit. Not so much the food itself, but my server failed to bring me an item I requested twice during my dinner (baked brie starter and later dessert; may that be the worst thing I endured. I was not charged; I think it was simply a matter of not being heard).
I also recommend the Korean tea and restaurant shop - Kun, and the gelato place steps from the metro entrance.

  1. Le Petit Cadet -- I recommend reservations, even at lunch; had both lunch and dinner there -- order from the daily chalkboard if you can
  2. Suzette Creperie -- great galettes and cider
  3. Boulangerie Dupuy - had an awesome tarte tatin
  4. A fantastic fromagerie
  5. Elie Traiteur -- simple, yet excellent Lebanese food (4.9 stars out of 5 on Google Reviews) also had a to go "bar" setup in front of the small restaurant
  6. Victoire Boulangerie -- had a great to go breakfast: quiche of the day and a classic French hot chocolate (yes, the thick kind)
  7. A wine bar and pizza place - Arcimboldo

There was also a small hotel (Hotel Fantaisie) on this street and a Freemasonry Museum (Musée de la Franc-Maçonnerie)

I stayed at Maison Mère in 2025. I thought it was a fine hotel and a great neighborhood. I chose it because it was walking distance to Gare de l'Est, from where I would be departing. Plus it was easy enough to walk from there to the main tourist spots in the 1st/2nd/3rd arr. I'll likely return for a trip next year when I will leave by train from Paris for places North.
