A Guide to Visiting Notre Dame during Holy Week and Easter [Resource]

Hi! Below are the details about visiting Notre Dame during Holy Week and Easter (from Sunday, April 13th until Sunday, April 20th), and the schedule of Easter Masses/services.

The full details about visiting Notre Dame, booking a time slot, least crowded times to visit, regular Mass info, etc, can be found on my Reddit post that I regularly keep updated, which has been shared on this forum by other members. I would post its contents here, but it's way longer than the word limit here!

No visitor time slots/reservations will be available from Sunday, April 13th until after Sunday, April 20th.

UPDATE: There will be a limited number of time slots available for April 14th, 15th, and 16th (morning only).

Visitors can still enter by waiting in the "Access without reservations" queue (blue signage), which is on the left side (if you're facing/looking at Notre Dame), but those who are attending for Mass/services and for prayer/worship get priority entrance over visitors/tourists. The crowds are expected to be very high during Holy Week and Easter, so be prepared for the possibility that you could be waiting up to 3 hours, with no guarantee that you'll be able to enter (if the capacity limit is reached).

Notre Dame has modified hours on the following days:

  • Wednesday, April 16th: Early closure (at 1:30pm) for visitors/tourists.
  • Saturday, April 19th: Early closure (at 4:30pm) for visitors/tourists.
  • Friday, April 18th & Saturday, April 19th: The gift shop will be closed.

If you're attending a Mass/service, you can wait in the "Mass and services only" queue. It's on the right side (if you're facing/looking at Notre Dame), and it's marked by a small white sign. Entrance starts 30 minutes ahead of the start time of whichever Mass/service you're attending. But if attending is really important to you, I recommend arriving 1 hour in advance, due to the large number of people that are expected to attend. Entrance is still subject to the available capacity inside the cathedral.

Certain services start at different hours than usual and/or are not happening during Holy Week/Easter (see individual notes beside each one):

Sunday, April 13th (Palm Sunday):

  • Palm Sunday Mass at 8:30am
  • Palm Sunday Mass at 10:30am (instead of the usual Gregorian Mass at 10:00am)
  • Palm Sunday Mass at 12:30pm (instead of the usual International Mass at 11:30am)

There is no Lauds and no Vespers

  • Evening Mass/Mass of the Lord's Supper led by the Archbishop of Paris at 7:00pm (instead of the usual 6:00pm)

There is no Morning Mass, Afternoon Mass or Vespers

  • Evening Mass/Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at 7:00pm (instead of the usual 6:00pm)

There is no Morning Mass, Afternoon Mass or Vespers

Saturday, April 19th (Holy Saturday):

  • Gregorian Mass at 10:00am
  • International Mass at 11:30am

Thank you! Not sure we are up for a three hour wait as we will only be in Paris for 24 hours, we found a church not far from our hotel that we plan to attend. Happy Easter!

Thank you for the synopsis!

So, I know no one has a crystal ball, but if one were going to try to visit Notre Dame next week anyway (on Monday or Tuesday), any thoughts on what would be the better option to try- right at opening in the AM or late afternoon?

Hi famousbill19,

That's understandable. Enjoy your stay in Paris!!

Hi Laura,

You're welcome! I would recommend right at opening/in the morning. Typically, late afternoon is the busiest time of the day.

I can’t help but notice that most of the text in the opening post is copied from the official website of the Notre Dame https://www.notredamedeparis.fr/en/holy-week-easter-2025/

I’m not sure what the RS forum rules with regards to posting copyrighted text are, but it would have been helpful and the right thing to do if you had mentioned the source of your information in your post.

Typically, direct copy/paste of this much content from another website is not OK. A 2-3 paragraph citation plus a link is the expectation for sharing long-form content from another site.

However, I note some adjustments between Emily's post and what's on their site (aka there is some work at making it her own presentation), and this is serving to inform about a schedule (as opposed to someone's copyrighted work). So, with the link now shared in this thread, I'm inclined to let it pass for now.

Don't let my post stop the conversation. Please reply to the main discussion re Holy Week and Notre Dame.

Emily, even though I keep checking for information about the opening of the Notre Dame Towers, I am hopeful that you also will be and will post that information here. TIA.

Hi Lindy,

I completely understand your excitement! As of now, the target reopening of the bell towers is mid-September.

I will do my best to post updates here! But I talk a lot (if you haven't noticed already, haha), so usually my full length updates are longer than the word limit (even some information for this post about Easter had to be cut to fit), and it can be a bit challenging to keep the information/updates that I post across multiple platforms all in sync/up to date. But full length updates will get posted to my Reddit post for sure.

An update:

  • Friday, April 18th and Saturday, April 19th: The gift shop will be closed.
  • There will be a limited number of time slots available for April 14th (Monday), April 15th (Tuesday), and the morning of the April 16th (Wednesday).

If you didn't manage to reserve time slots for those dates when they released the first batch, a second batch of new/additional "same day" time slots are released 4 hours in advance. For example: At 5:00am (Paris time), new time slots are released for 9:00am for that same day. At 5:30am, new time slots are released for 9:30am, etc. However, there are certain hours when no time slots are ever offered, therefore no new time slots are released 4 hours in advance of those hours. For example: No time slots are offered for 12:00pm, therefore no new time slots will be released at 8:00am. The availability of these time slots is based on the planned and/or current capacity available inside the cathedral, and are not guaranteed.

if you're not visiting on one of those 3 days, and you still want to visit on a day when they're not offering any time slots (and want to visit as a regular tourist, not attending a service), I would recommend visiting before 10:30am/11:00am at the latest to avoid the heavier crowds.

Hi adodd/Peter!

Mass:

  • Monday to Friday at 8:00am, 12:00pm and 6:00pm
  • Saturday at 8:30am, 12:00pm, and 6:00pm (Anticipated)
  • Sunday at 8:30am, 10:00am (Latin/Gregorian), 11:30am (International), and 6:00pm (Diocesan/led by a Bishop or occasionally, by the Archbishop of Paris)

Vespers:

  • Monday to Friday at 5:30pm

  • Saturday and Sunday at 5:15pm

Lauds:

  • Sunday at 9:30am

The full Notre Dame de Paris Choir sings during the 10:00am, 11:30am and 6:00pm Masses on Sunday, during the 6:00pm Mass during the week and on Saturday, during Lauds, and during Vespers.

The grand organ is played during the 10:00am, 11:30am and 6:00pm Masses on Sunday, and occasionally during the 6:00pm Mass during the week and/or on Saturday (for liturgical holidays/special occasions).

thank you Rick. We're in Paris for only Fri, Sat & Sun; I've been trying to find info on Mass times for 2 days now & keep getting error messages. I would love to tour Notre Dame, but venerating the Crown of Thorns & attending Easter Mass (at any time!) is priority & this info helps. thanks again, & Happy Easter!

thank you Rick.

Hi, Rick Steves offers this digital space, but he isn't usually online here.

People responding here are volunteering their time (except when a member of the Rick Steves staff responds; their posts clearly identify them as staff members).

Hi luci.kammenzind!

I'm not Rick, but I'm happy I could help!

You're not the only one who's seeing the error messages (others were also getting the same issue last night too). I'm not sure exactly what's triggering it, but it seems that the error is related to an issue with the metadata that's within the site's headers. Hopefully it will get resolved shortly.

I hope you you're able to attend the Veneration and Easter Mass. It's a lovely experience. Happy Easter to you too!
