A few notes from last week's Paris trip with a broken foot

We planned a trip using Delta Skymiles and IHG points to enjoy another week in Paris. Unfortunately, I broke my foot 10 days before we left and I was now in a walking boot. My orthopedist had no issues with me going, but some changes were made....

First, I paid to upgrade our flights to First and Premium. It made this trip a bit less of a bargain, but I was concerned about room for the boot and arriving with the foot already hurting. The flights were nice. I also used wheelchair service in Charlotte (my husband pushed), Atlanta (they were phenomenal) and Charles de Gaulle (don't bother if you can possibly walk - disorganized, long waits at every stage). On the way home I used no wheelchairs and didn't upgrade the flights. I did luck out on an empty bank of 4 middle seats where I could elevate my foot for part of the flight.

Upon arrival at CDG my husband got our checked bags (couldn't manage carry on with the foot) while I slowly moved through wheelchair land. When we met up we walked to the taxi rank and took one to the 8th. I had never taken a taxi into Paris before and it was quite pleasant - 56 Euros, plus I tipped. We were staying at the intercontinental Champs Elysees on points and it was a good choice for my limited mobility (ie, nice sized room and good elevator.)

I had pre booked tickets the ballet (good elevator), dinner on Le Calife (stairs), tickets to the top of the Eiffel tower (did some stairs but didn't have to) and a concert at St. Germain des Pres (accessible). We accomplished all of this using buses, metro and uber, plus a lot of walking. Probably more walking that was prudent, really, but I survived. I had my Navigo Decouverte and we got one for my husband. The metro employee at first told us that we could not load a weekly pass on Thursday morning, but this was incorrect. After I loaded mine using the machine, we went back to buy the card for my husband and he told me that he had been wrong. I was just planning to load it at the machine, but since he realized his error without me even mentioning it, we completed the transaction at the counter. And we definitely saved quite a bit over individual tickets even in just 4 days with the pass.

We bought the 6 day museum pass since this was now a museum heavy week and used it all six days. It was no issue asking to use the elevator at the Arc de Triomphe, though there were still stairs, and I could manage - just slowly. Most of the museums had working elevators, some where we had to have permission, but most freely available. We ate in more museum cafes than usual. Highlights were George at the top of the Pompidou and Hanok at the Asiatic Arts - both lovely meals. In total, I think we visited 12 or so museums in 5 full days. We really enjoyed the architectural crypte with the current display of objects found in the Seine, and also the Cite d'architecture & du Patrimonie. I also took the opportunity to do the Canal St. Martin boat tour since I had never done it and I knew I could sit. It was OK. There were still stairs to get down to the quay and on the boat. Maybe there was an elevator somewhere, but I never saw it.

Metro stations were more problematic due to broken elevators and escalators, or because sometimes we just gave up on finding the easy way and took the stairs that were in front of us. I would be cautious there if you really can't do stairs. The buses were so much easier for me, but we mostly went with the most direct route, whatever that was.

For our return to CDG we took an uber for just 35 Euros plus a tip. We would have needed new tickets for that, so it felt like a bargain.

All that being said, I'm not going back with a broken foot again if I can help it. I just felt limited and I didn't like that. But I did see the orthopedist again today and healing continues with no negative impact from all of the walking.

My husband injured his foot in Paris last spring. We used the G7 taxi app everywhere we went. It was so convenient and got us everywhere we wanted to go. More expensive than walking and metro, but we found it really helpful under less than desirable circumstances. Glad you are on the mend.
