Any suggestions for while staying in Avignon/Arles area?
Question is too vague : when? How many days? Do you have a car? What are your main interests? There is a lot to do in the region....
You can spend a couple days just for sights in Arles. I didn't think as much of Avignon. Either can be a good base for exploring but you really need a car.
A lot depends on what appeals to you? I focused on Roman History and Van Gogh more than anything else. I think five days is a minimum to visit Provence. If you have less, you'll just have to be more choosy about the sights you spend your time seeing.
Pont du Gard was a favorite out of a bunch of things to see.
We really enjoyed our time in Avignon in 2014. It is just a nice place to be - but it is also great base for day tours. We used this company for a couple of tours and were extremely pleased with them:

We didn't go to Arles - maybe next time.
And another spot near Avignon: Villeneuve-les-Avignon, right across the river (city bus service).
I thoroughly enjoyed staying in Avignon and using it as a base to see Arles, St-Remy and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. All of medieval Avignon isn't touristy. you just need to get off the main drag and away from the area near the train station.
I really enjoyed Palais de Papes in Avignon. The audio/video guide that comes with your ticket was helpful. Arles didn't thrill but it was a good home base for drives to the Pont du Gard-I really enjoyed the museum, also check out https://www.carrieres-lumieres.com/fr, it was spectacular.
