A couple days in Pau?

We are mostly doing the Rick Steves tour of France in September, but I decided to add stops in Bordeaux and Pau to the trip (in lieu of staying in areas we have already been to). I intended Pau partly as a break from more hectic sight seeing.

Can anyone recommend anything about, or in or around, Pau?

I have some family in Pau and I went back there last year after a long absence. There is not a ton to do there, but it is still a very pleasant town. The Chateau is a fun visit, the Boulevard des Pyrénées and the rest of the city center make for a nice stroll.
A day trip to Lourdes is very easy from Pau; with a car you can also plan excursions into the Pyrenees.

There is good food in Pau overall. The central market (Les Halles) is a great spot for lunch, it has been set up like a food court upstairs. And I really enjoyed dinner at restaurant Paute last year.

I think Pau will be just right for what you are looking for.

It is not hectic, and there is just enough to slowly fill a short break. The views of the Pyrennes are incredible. Last time I visited in April, there was still snow on them.

Do visit the Chateau. I went because I´m interested in Henry III (later Henry IV of France) but I was surprised by what Louis Philippe did to the chateau.

I´d recommend On Egin! For a meal. It is close to the chateau.

FWIW, Pau it seems, is become a popular place for expats to retire to.
