Within 24 hours after returning home from our amazing trip to Barcelona, Provence, and Nice (thanks to all who provided input for our trip), I fell and broke my ankle in 3 places. I'm occupying myself by preliminary planning for our 2020 trip. I'm very interested in spending 6 or 7 nights in the area of the Dordogne and Lot valleys. We would like to visit two caves, see the towns and castles, and spend time on and in the rivers, most likely around the third week of June. Smaller or larger towns are fine with us, as long as it's relatively easy to get in and out of town for day trips with a rental car. My questions are:
1) Would you choose just one base (and if so where?) or two bases--one on the Dordogne and one on the Lot (and again, if so, where?)
2) If you chose two bases, how would you split 6 nights between them?
3) I'd appreciate efficient and cost-effective suggestions for how to get to the area from the San Francisco/Oakland area. Right now flights to Toulouse or Bordeaux show up at over $2,000 one way. It looks like flying to Paris and taking the TGV to Bordeaux to pick up a car might be the best bet. After the week in the Dordogne, we would be heading to Switzerland for a week (likely 5 nights Muerren and 2 nights Lucerne), but that will be a separate post sometime in the future.
