5 nights in French Alps (Thônes)...must do/see ?

Hi ! from august 3 to august 8 we will be in Thônes in an airbnb. We have chosen Thônes only because the appartment was nice and that Th¸eone is bifg enough to have grocery and restaurants. It's also kind of central. Maybe is not the better option but we will live with it I guess !

We (2 adults and 11 and 15 years old kids) are looking for the must see/do. Of course we will :
1) Go in Annecy. We will also be there for la ''fête du Lac'' but my guess is that it's too much crowdy to be enjoyable.
2) Go to Chamonix (Mont-Blanc)

Any good ideas ? Must do hike ? We are not big hikers but we love not too strenuous walk that give us great sights.

Thanks !

I recently replied to a query about things to do near Annecy. The thread is here. It is also relevant for Thônes, and as the person who originally mentioned Thônes... I guess I have to answer :-)

For local hiking options near Thônes, there are three easy hike options that have great views:
- Col de la Croix Fry to Plateau de Beauregard
- Col des Aravis to Croix de Fer and Chalet du Curé
- Plateau des Glieres' sentier de découverte (starting point : "Chez La Jode", up a twisty narrow road beware)
Since you are francophone, you can have a look at the "Visorando" website for hike ideas and descriptions (if you search for the above options, you'll find many such descriptions). And Géoportail gives online access to hiking maps, with a good app and GPS feature.

Even closer to Thônes, the prehistoric site and the waterfall at La Balme de Thuy can be of interest. Across the road, there is a resistance memorial at Morette cemetery (but the memorial on Plateau des Glieres is more impressive).

Foodwise, if you are looking for a treat, Confins des Sens in le Grand Bornand is great. Haven't been to Thônes in many years so I do not know about the current restaurant situation there.

Thanks a lot Balso !

Do you think Thônes is an ok choice or we should have done a much better choice ?

Thônes is an attractive small town, with a lovely mountain backdrop and a very convenient location to tour the area between Annecy and Chamonix. Accommodation tends to be much more affordable than on lake Annecy or in the mountain resorts, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the town so, if your accommodation is central enough, there is no need to drive everywhere.

Now, is Thônes the most postcard-perfect town/village in the region? It is not. It is a place where people live and work, with several factories (furniture mostly, no smell/fumes), supermarkets, etc. Have a look at Google Street View, coverage is very thorough.
For a more "quintessentially alpine" experience, the villages of Manigod and Le Grand Bornand, higher up in the mountains above Thônes, have plenty of chalet-style rental properties. They are very expensive in summer, and they tend to be large. Also, the villages are spread out and most places require a car even to buy some bread (that's the most French criteria ever). But if you have second thoughts about Thônes, check Le Grand Bornand and see what you find. La Clusaz is another option, but I do not like the village as much (some not-so-pretty resort buildings there, and very intrusive skiing lifts in the landscape).
You could also go down towards the lake (Talloires, Menthon), but demand far exceeds supply, anything with a lake view will cost dearly, and crowds+traffic can be annoying.

In short: if you found accommodation you like, at a price you like, in Thônes, you will have a good time and you should stick with it. But comparing with that you can find in other nearby villages is free!

Thanks once again Balso !

The airbnb in Thônes we have got splendid reviews, got parking, a washing machine, space for the four of us, a balcony and the price is right. I've check on google map and we can go almost everywhere in the city in a 5-10 minutes walk so I guess we will keep it.

After all Thônes is our base but not the main point of our trip.

If it is that close to the center, then it is perfect. Keep it! Thônes is a very good base.

My grandparents had an apartment on that street, maybe in the building complex next door. I confirm that it is perfectly central! The center of the action is rue des Clefs and the square around the post office.
