4 nights between Avignon and Paris... what to do where to go

Hi,

I have 4 nights to go somewhere after Avignon and before we fly out of Paris.

We are in France for 4 weeks and will have already been to Paris, Normandy, Loire valley, Colmar and Avignon.

I was thinking on Annecy but am I missing out on something better?

Note we are catching the train and bus so must be accessible by public transport. Have already done Nice etc previously so don't want to go there again.

We love history & castles etc not really into shopping or drinking.

Thoughts?

I'd say Lyon.

Burgundy is quite lovely. but hard to get about without wheels.. That said, the wheels don't need to be on a car—if you are cyclists, you can have a great time in Beaune.

Both are enrout to Paris.

Hi Teresa,
Maybe check out Uzes, which is an hour west of Avignon in Gard. There is a public bus, the same same one that goes to the Pont du Gard Roman Aqueduct from Avignon. If memory serves, it was the #A15 Edgard company bus but plz double check this, perhaps on the excellent 'RometoRio' transportation-oriented site, then again on the official Edgard site.
Uzes was a major highlight on our recent trip. Its market days are Saturday for the big one and Wednesday for the smaller-but-still-essential-one with different vendors. You could read our recent 'Provencal Echo' trip report, which has plenty of info on Avignon but moreso on Uzes.
Another option that you'll have will be to stay somewhere along the Burgundy wine route. Beaune is an obvious choice on the train line but there are many other places. Meursault is quieter and smaller. The Transco #44 bus (aka the Burgundy Express) is indispensable for car-less travelers in that area. Dijon is also an interesting place and would also allow for a daytrip over to wonderful Semur-en-Auxois.
All these aforementioned places would be great foils after BIG CITY Avignon.
Bonne chance Teresa!
I am done. The end.
