4. days in Bayeux France

We are two Canadians who have 4 nights and 4 days in Bayuex, France. We have already booked an Overlord tour of the Canadian and British Battlefields. We understand the Bayeux Tapestry will not be there when we visit in October. We are looking for other suggestions of places to see. My husband is not interested in booking a tour of the American Beaches. We do have a rental car so will be able to drive around and will have just spent two days in Caen exploring sights in that area. We plan a day trip to Mont St. Michel on our own for one of the days.

Thanks for your help.

You should find out while there that there is a lot more to see from WWII than simply the "beaches." That being the case, there are several German gun emplacement that are in the American Sector (but may not be on your tour) that didn't care which allied ships they targeted (ask them which you will visit). The Azeville Battery is one of the most impressive IMHO. Also, right outside of the Normandy American Cemetery is the Overlord Museum. It is not primarily about American activities and has a wonderful collection of WWII vehicles. In Sainte-Mère-Église, there is the Ferme-musée du Cotentin, which shows the history or the Normandy farming life—mostly pre-WWII. Cherbourg and the Falaise areas are also very interesting.

P.S. The Falaise Gap was a horrible and gruesome (for the Germans) battle that was fought by the Americans to the South and the Canadians to the North in a giant pincer move. It sealed off a large portion of the German army and effectively routed the Germans from the bulk of Normandy. After that it was on to Berlin.

When I was in that area for a week last May I took a ride to Cherbourg and visited La Cite de la Mer at the harbor. It was one of the best days I had. The city is interesting, the harbor even more so (but I've spent a portion of my life working large ports), there's traces of WWII and the food was excellent. I really regret not buying a couple more cases of Norman cider.

I liked the museum in Falaise about civilian life during the war; it includes coverage of tne Resistance. I visited by bus from Caen.

The invasion museum in Bayeux is quite good.

If you are there on a market day, visit that, for sure!

Take a day trip to Arromanches-les-Bains if it isn’t part of your D-Day tour.
