3 Weeks in France

Hi All!

I'm planning a trip to France for my family of 4 in August. 2 of us will be there for the full three weeks, and the other two will join us for the final week. We generally like slower travel and immersing ourselves in the town rather than moving around a lot. We will not have a car, so we plan to travel by train (and bus when necessary).

This is my current itinerary, but I am very open to suggestions. We will all be flying in and out of Paris.

  • 4 nights in Paris, with a day-trip to the Loire Valley

  • 7 nights in Britanny (likely based in Saint-Malo or Rennes), with day-trips to Mont-Saint-Michel, Dinan, and Cancale.

  • 7 nights in Lyon. The full family will meet there for the final 5 nights. Day-trips to Annecy, and potentially Beaune and Perouges.

  • 3 nights in Paris as a family before flying home.

I've also considered spending fewer days in Brittany and adding a few nights in Bordeaux. However, I've read many mixed opinions on how many days to spend in Bordeaux, which has made me lean toward spending more time in Brittany instead.

Another itinerary I considered was:

  • 4 nights in Paris, with a day-trip to the Loire Valley.

  • 4-5 nights in Aix-en-Provence

  • 4-5 nights in Antibes, with day-trips to Nice and Monaco.

  • 5 nights in Lyon as a family.

  • 3 nights in Paris as a family.

My hesitation with this option is that Provence and the French Riviera will be hotter and more expensive in August, and only half of the family would get to experience that portion of the trip.

Would love to hear recommendations on Brittany (and maybe Bordeaux), Provence/Riviera, or something else entirely? Any recommendations are welcome -- this trip is still in the early planning stages, and I'd be happy to look into destinations I may have overlooked.

Thank you!!

We find Brittany more culturally and culinarily interesting. Bordeaux is okay but tous, just a launching pad to the countryside around it.

One big hesitation for me would be the amount of heatwaves Bordeaux gets in the summertime.

Skip day trip to Loire. Waste too much time traveling.
Consider day trip to St Etienne from Lyon. 45 minutes by train.
