3 week itinerary for France and Switzerland

We are planning a trip by train through France and Switzerland, starting in Paris for three nights and hoping to take a day trip to dday in Normandy and back to Paris. Take a train from Paris to Aix en Provence for four nights, on to Nice for three nights, then to Lyon for two nights. Head to Geneva for 3 nights from Lyon, from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen Valley four nights and then to Zurich for two night, fly back to the United States from here. Is this doable? Is it too much?

Thanks in advance for any help or tips for this trip!

It sounds like a fun trip and IMO, fairly well paced. My only comments would be that unless you are interested in the UN and or CERN, I found more interesting cities in Switzerland than Geneva. If you want to be on the lake, maybe Lausanne or Montreaux? Secondly, I think a day trip to Normandy is really tough. In order to make it work, I think you'd have to do a tour from Paris, and even then, there is so much in Normandy, and I feel like you'd see very little. I would consider dropping Geneva and doing 2 nights in Bayeux. At the end of the trip, I'd suggest Luzern instead of Zurich. Luzern is an incredibly picturesque city in the mountains and on a lake. Luzern is close enough and Swiss trains reliable enough that you can get to the Zurich airport from Luzern unless you have an early morning flight.

I would encourage you to spend a minimum of two nights in Bayeux. IMO a day trip to the D-Day sites is not nearly enough. We booked a private half-day tour upon arrival in order to obtain an overview of the area. We then spent the next several days visiting the sites on our own. We prefer smaller towns/villages to large cities, so our choice was to only spend one night in Zurich (before an early morning flight) in order to focus more on the Alps. Our stay in Wengen was magical!

I agree with the others. We are headed to France in June, so I don’t want to comment on that part of your trip. But we have been to Switzerland. I would stay somewhere other than Geneva. We stayed in Montreux and were able to walk along a beautiful lakeside path to the Chateau de Chillon. We took the paddle-wheel boat and spent a day in Lausanne. We even went across the lake to Evian les Bains for lunch. (My husband says that counts as “doing” France! LOL!)
And I would pick either Wegen or Mürren rather than Lauterbrunnen. There is nothing to compare to sleeping up high in the Alps. We stayed in Mürren - loved every minute and wished we could have had one more day there. We stayed in Lucern and loved it. The covered bridges were so charming! We went from there to Italy, but I’ve heard others say that it’s easy to get back to Zurich for a same day flight.
Have a great trip! It sounds fabulous!

I think Nice to Lyon is a fairly long train trip and sort of backtracking. If you visited Lyon then Aix en Provence and then Nice, maybe you could fly to Switzerland and save some travel time?

Thanks for the advice, I will look into staying in Normandy longer and look fat some of the places mentioned other than Geneva. The advice is helpful in planning our trip.

Certainly sounds do-able.

With 3 nights in Paris including a Normandy day trip, that allows just a single full day in Paris. You have two full days in Geneva, Nice and Lyon. Three in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Sounds like a deliberate choice, though I thought I’d mention it.

I have been to Paris before and did all the tourist things, so am rethinking of not staying in Paris and staying 3 days in Bayeux. Would like to figure out the best and fastest way to get from there to Aix, thinking probably a train! I would be grateful for any advice. Also, looking at going to Lyon from Aix and from Lyon to Annecy by train and from Anncey to Lauterbrunnen Valley, probably staying in Wengen. Is this a good idea ?
